B2 Sports Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, April 18, 2018 Lady Pro bats alive in 2-0 sweep of TigerScots Grant Union ends both games in five innings By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle The Grant Union Pros- pector girls’ bats stayed hot despite chilly weather in their doubleheader home sweep of Weston-McEwen TigerScots Friday, 19-3 and 25-5, ending both in five innings. Prospector Whitney Mc- Clellan had her first and sec- ond home runs of the season, hitting a three-run homer in game one and a one-run ho- mer in game two. Tiler Voigt also had her first homer for Grant Union, and Brianna Zweygardt also hit a homer, though not her first. “Everyone was really get- ting after it at the plate today,” McClellan said. “We used Tuesday’s loss to motivate us to come back better.” Grant Union had a low-scoring loss to Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii on April 10, falling 2-1 to the Rockets in John Day. On Friday, Grant Union pitcher Cody Jo Madden held off the TigerScots in the first inning and pitched through the third with Zweygardt re- lieving in the fourth and clos- ing out game one. The Prospectors scored most of their runs early, with five in the bottom of the first. They scored nine in the second after Hailie Wright and Zweygardt each doubled, and then Madi McKrola bat- ted in her teammates with a single. Grant Union loaded the bases back up and with Shaine Madden at the plate. Weston-McEwen called a timeout to switch pitchers from Jordyn Lambert to Sky- ler Walter. Shaine Madden singled with one RBI, and Macy Strong hit a line drive to cen- ter, singling with two RBIs. McClellan hit the ball over the center field fence, for three runs. Mariah Moulton singled. Then Hailie Wright hit to the fence and an outfielder dropped the ball, and Moulton reached home. The Prospec- tors ended the inning up 14-1 and continued for the win. By the end of the second inning of game two, Grant Union was up 19-1. Zweygardt pitched the first three innings. Moulton relieved in the fourth, striking out two Tiger- Scots in the inning, and first baseman Strong caught the ball for the final out, the score 25-3. Two TigerScots doubled in the final inning, and scored two more runs, before Moul- ton ended on a positive note with a strikeout. “It was a good game,” Moulton said. “Some girls came around with their hit- ting, and everyone connected with the ball. It was a cold day, but everyone kept their energy up and had fun playing the game.” Grant Union head coach Zach Williams said his team still has some fundamen- tals to improve on, but he was pleased overall with his team’s performance. “They swung at good pitches and played good de- fense for the most part,” he said. The game was called due to rain in the bottom of the seventh inning, so three Grant Union runs in the top of the seventh didn’t count, the game ending with the sixth inning score. “We just have to contin- ue to work hard and focus in practice and get better every day,” Williams said after that game. The Prospectors hosted the Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii/ Ukiah Rockets on Tuesday in league action, past press time. Grant Union is on the road to Pilot Rock for a doubleheader at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. The Prospectors are currently 7-7 on the season and ranked No. 17 among OSAA’s 2A teams. Our hitters got behind in too many counts to hit aggressively.” Grant Union outhit Pi- lot Rock 3-2, but Pilot Rock came up with two unearned runs. Prospector Mariah Moul- ton scored on a single from Madi McKrola. “I hate to lose, and the girls hate to lose, but that was the best competition we’ve had all season,” Williams said. “I’d rather play that game over and over than games that aren’t competitive.” He added, “The girls came back to practice ready to go on Wednesday, and they’re just working to get better.” The Prospectors faced the Nyssa Bulldogs for their first league game of the season in doubleheader action Tuesday, April 17, past press time.
