Grant Union had a full boys cross country team run- ning in Friday’s 3A/2A/1A District 5 Championships at Pendleton Community Park. “The weather was beau- tiful, and the course was flat, which makes for PR’s (person- al records),” said Grant Union head coach Sonna Smith. Thanks to a generous do- nor, most of the varsity team members were provided with cross country spikes for the race. “Coach Brandon (Smith) and I were both happy with how the athletes performed,” Sonna said. “We had some outstanding efforts on both varsity and junior varsity, and that translated to personal bests.” Setting a season record was junior Bo Olson with a time of 19:52. Sophomore Cole Deit- er, junior Braden Spencer and sophomore Donavan Smith also set personal records. On the girls side, sopho- more Erika Dickens earned a season record, and sophomore Grant Union results Boys varsity Bo Olson, 19:52.2, season record Gage Brandon, 20:07.1 Tanner Elliott, 20:08.9 Cole Deiter, 20:44.0, personal record Elisha Sheedy, 20:55.7 Braden Spencer, 21:13.3, personal record Donavan Smith, 21:40.0, personal record Girls varsity Erika Dickens, 23:15.3, season record Savannah Wyllie, 23:31.1 Sierra Cates, 28:12.5, personal record Ellie Justice, 29:45.4 Boys junior varsity Jacob Smith, 21:41.3, personal record Jesse Randleas, 22:24.8 Nathaniel Hodge, 29:12.5 Contributed photo/JJ Collier Grant Union cross country runners make their start at the 3A/2A/1A District 5 Championships in Pendleton. Sierra Cates set a personal re- cord. Sonna explained how com- petitive their league is. “Most districts in 1A/2A/3A get to take the top three teams and top five in- dividuals to state,” she said. “Our Special District 5 gets to take only the top two teams and top five individuals, which really makes no sense because we are overloaded with talent.” She added, “Our district has had the men’s first-place team seven times since 2007, and five out of the last five years, ladies teams from our league have placed first or second at state.” Out of 11 teams, the Union boys placed first with Burns in second place. 06183 9.Rams vs Giants Ny da m’ s week 9 of 13 • IT’S EASY • IT’S FREE The helpful place.
