A10 History Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, May 31, 2017 O UT OF THE P AST 50 years ago June 1, 1967 Seneca Rope Jumpers Off to Nation’s Capital Traveling on their way to Wash- ington, D.C., for a performance in the nation’s capitol, as guests of the Oregon congressional delegation, are members of the Seneca Rope Jumpers. The 11-member group left Wednesday for a two-week cross-country trip with a special stop in Chicago. Wednesday, the Seneca Rope Jumpers performed at Treasure Valley Community College at noon before members of the Ontario Ki- wanis club. During the afternoon the rope jumpers toured the college and Ontario. Main Street of Ontario was closed at 4 p.m. for a public perfor- mance by the jumpers. The jumpers were featured with a dinner at TVCC before leaving for Chicago by train on the Union Pacific. The rope jumpers will be traveling both ways on Union Pacific. Public rela- tions officials of Union Pacific will be working with the rope jumpers. Chicago will be the first stop of the trip for the Seneca Rope Jumpers. The group will tour the Windy City and will eat at the Palmer House as guests of the Edward Hines Lum- ber Co. A representative of Al Ull- man will greet the rope jumpers when they arrive in Washington Sat- urday morning. The group will per- form in the evening for the National USO Club as special guests. After a day off Sunday, the group will jump Monday in the Caucus Room of the Cannon Office Building at 10:30 a.m. for the Oregon congressional delegation and other guests. The rope jumpers will have lunch at the White House with Congress- man Ullman. In the afternoon the group will visit both the Senate and House while in session. Tuesday, the rope jumpers will be featured with a congressional guided tour of the White House. Ullman is attempting to have the rope jumpers appear on television in Washington. The rope jumpers will leave Washington June 8 and will return to Seneca June 12. Performing for the jumpers are Nan Sproul, Lori Smith, Glenna Thissell, Karen Griffith, Sharon Thissell, Dar- lene Lissman, Linda Smith, Geor- gene Hansen, Sherry Walker, Patty Tout and Pam Boswell. The group will be performing under the direc- tion of Mrs. Esma Reynolds, who has been with the jumpers since it was formed in 1946. Assisting with the rope jumpers are Mrs. Dorothy Klabo, Mrs. Jean Sproul, Mrs. Phyl- lis Lissman, Mrs. Zora Thissell and Mrs. Nadine Lissman.
