A2 Family Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, May 17, 2017 Grant County spelling whizzes compete Blue Mountain Eagle Spellers from all corners of the county competed at this year’s Grant Education Service District County Spelling Contest held Thursday, April 27, at the John Day Elks Lodge No. 1824. There were 45 students from the fi ve Grant County school districts participating in the con- test, which was divided into four divisions, including Primary for grades K-3, Division I for grades 4-5, Division II for grades 6-8 and Division III for 9-12. First-place winners each re- ceived a Kindle Fire. Second place earned a hydro fl ask and third place a Cinch Sac back pack. The top spellers in Divi- sions I through III have the op- portunity to compete at the Sept. 2 Oregon Spellers Statewide Spelling Championship at the state fairgrounds in Salem. Savannah Kowing, an em- ployee with the Education Ser- vice District, lauded those who supported the students, the vol- unteers and the John Day Elks Lodge for their help with the event. Readers were Stacie Hol- mstrom, Chris Cronin, Ashley Masterson-Armichardy and Sa- vannah Kowing. Test correctors, in addition to the readers, were Donna Becker, Kyle Pettyjohn, Andrea Combs, Ryan Gerry and Jo Sproul. The master of cere- mony was ESD Superintendent Robert Waltenburg. Poppy Days are May 18-20 Blue Mountain Eagle National Poppy Day is Friday, May 26, and the red American Legion Auxiliary paper poppies will be avail- able by donation locally Thursday through Saturday, May 18-20, at Chester’s Thriftway in John Day. The poppies are worn to honor the fallen and support the living military service members, and proceeds from donations assist disabled and hospital- ized veterans. Grant Union junior Rea- gan Shelley, this year’s Girls State delegate through the American Legion Auxilia- ry Unit No. 77 in John Day, handed out the fi rst poppy this week at the school. She will attend the June 11-17 session of Girls State at Wil- lamette University in Salem. G RANT U NION CLARINETIST PLACES FIFTH AT STATE Grant Union sophomore Carle Wright competed at the April 29 OSAA Solo State Championships, finishing fifth in low clarinet.
