This year, most Easter egg hunts are planned for Saturday, April 15. We are celebrating the resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ April 13th to Easter Sunday Some local churches will of- fer “special services” during Holy Week (April 9-16) other than the regular Palm and Easter Sunday services. An example will be the Seder meal offered at Redeemer Luther- an Church on Maundy Thursday at 5 p.m. April 13. Community members will be provided the op- portunity to partake in a traditional Passover meal that Jesus would likely have had with his disciples that fi nal week before his dishon- orable death on the cross. When asked why this is offered, church elder Buzz Gilmore said, “It’s a way to better understand Jesus’ Jewishness and to have a clearer picture of how the Lord’s Supper came about.” This Seder meal is very similar to the one in which Jesus partook in and little has changed in the last 2,000 years as the Jewish commu- nity has preserved the tradition. The order and text, the Haggadah, was compiled at an earlier time, during the Second Temple Period (520 B.C. to A.D. 70) in Judea. History supports the authenticity of the Haggadah we have today and the assurance that it is very close to what Jesus led at Passover. Deacon Bill Gurney developed the Haggadah for this Seder to en- able Christians to experience a gen- uine Seder as well as emphasize the unique details that Christians can appreciate and fi nd helpful to Maundy Thursday services will be held at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal, 541-620- 1436, and at 7:15 p.m. at Re- deemer Lutheran. Good Friday services will occur at 6:30 p.m. at Grace Chapel in Prairie City (541- 820-4437); at 7 p.m. at the John Day United Methodist, 541-575-1326; and from noon to 3 p.m. for Tre Ore as well as an evening service at 7 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran. St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 541-575-1549, will hold services on Holy Thurs- day, Good Friday and an Eas- ter Vigil on Saturday. grow in their faith life. Redeemer Church has offered this Seder to the community for the past three years. People outside our church commu- nity have attended the Seder and were very impressed by the warmth of our community and excited by the amount learned from being a part of such an important but rare- ly offered Holy Week celebration. Anyone in Grant County is wel- comed to join us, but they must call the church at 541-575-2348 ahead of time because seating is limited and advance planning is necessary. Francis Kocis is an elder at Re- deemer Lutheran Church. To con- tact him, call 541-575-5840.
