The boys 4x100-meter relay team, with Nathan Gal- miche, Jerry Zhang, Matheus Gamba and Emile Stainer, finished in second place at the April 4 Grant Union Small School Meet in John Day where they made their debut on the track. “They’re all will- ing to work hard and try,” Studtmann said. “They’ve been learning a little at a time.” He said Inscore lends a lot of assistance, to his team and others at competitions. “Skip Inscore has coached a lot of state cham- pions — mostly in javelin,” he said, adding that one thrower, Paula Berry, went on to compete in the Olym- pics. Humphreys added discus to her events this year, and she may add more, including long jump, triple jump and possibly shot put. Gabe Walker added triple jump to his usual events, and the long jump, 100-meter dash and 110 hurdles. “I really like triple jump,” he said. “I was surprised to find that I like it.” His goal is to finish the 100 with a time of 12.50 and to reach a mark of 36 feet in the triple jump. He’s reached person- al records in all his events this year, including the 200 which he tried once last year. Walker said the smaller team aspect is all right. “With a team of two, you spend a lot of time with the other person,” he said. “She (Humphreys) is one of my good friends.” Humphreys said her goal this season is to reach over 140 feet in javelin. “I’m shooting for state,” she said. She also plans to compete in the Down Under Sports competition next summer in Australia. “I’m thankful to my big brother, my parents and principal for supporting me in what I love to do,” she said. G RANT C OUNTY S PORTS R OUNDUP Grant Union softball sweeps Heppner/Ione The Grant Union Prospec- tor softball team improved its nonleague record to 9-1 after Saturday’s doubleheader sweep in Heppner. Prospector Cody Jo Madden pitched Game One’s 14-10 win over Heppner/Ione. Grant Union was up 5-0, early in the game, before falling behind by three. Then the Prospectors broke away, scoring seven runs in the fifth and two in the seventh for the win. “Overall, the first game was cold and windy, and we had to battle ourselves,” said Grant Union head coach DeAnna Nash. “The girls really became determined after falling behind.” Whitney McClellan, Ravyn Walker, Mariah Moulton and Marissa Smith each had two hits, the team with 15 hits over- all. Grant Union carried the mo- mentum stirred up late in Game One to Game Two, winning 13-2. Madden pitched four in- nings and Mariah Moulton closed the game in the fifth. Grant Union had a total of 13 hits, and Madden gave up just five hits with Moulton clos- ing the game quickly with one strikeout and one hit. “Marissa and Mariah were perfect at the plate, including a home run by Mariah that se- cured the game in the fifth,” Nash said. Grant Union starts league play Friday, hosting Nyssa for two games at 1 p.m. at Seventh Street Complex. The Prospectors host league opponent Echo/Stanfield for two games at 1 p.m. Saturday. Prospector baseball loses to undefeated Rangers Grant Union had some tough competition in its first league game of the season against 7-0 Dufur/South Was- co. The game’s scheduled loca- tion was Malone Field in John Day, but due to the weather, including snow on the ground, the game was moved to Burns. Dufur won Game One 12-7 and Game Two 11-1. “We played well against Dufur — they have some very good pitching,” said Grant Union head coach Dusty Wil- liams. “Zack Deiter, Billy Co- penhaver threw really well for us, and Warner Robertson came in and threw very well in relief in Game Two.” Deiter had four strikeouts and gave up six hits and no walks, Copenhaver had two strikeouts and gave up four hits and four walks and Robertson had four strikeouts and gave up six hits and two walks. In the two games, Dieter was 4 of 7 at the plate with one RBI and two runs, and Ty Mc- Daniel was 3 of 7, hit a triple and had four RBI. Jesse Paul- son was 1 of 7 with two RBI and one run. Wade Reimers scored two runs, and Copenhaver, Cauy Weaver and Cameron Hallgarth each had one run. Grant Union traveled to Culver to face the Bulldogs on Tuesday, past press time. Grant Union head coach Ron Lundbom said this will be the first 18-hole match for his athletes. He said last week’s Pendle- ton Invitational was supposed to be the kickoff to the season, but the wind decided to “kick up” with 60 mph wind gusts. “Two trees blew over, and branches were blowing out of trees,” Lundbom said. The team concluded the day by playing six holes when they returned to John Day. The GUHS Tournament will include Vale, Nyssa, Burns, Heppner, Enterprise, Wallowa and Grant Union teams. Lund- bom said all the teams are ex- pected to make it. “I’m looking forward to it,” Lundbom said. “Anyone who wants to come out and watch us — (they can) sit out at the club or walk on the course — is welcome.” The Grant Union golf team and the John Day Golf Club will team up for an 18-hole Hell-of-It fundraiser tourna- ment on Sunday, April 23. Registration starts at 10 a.m. with tee off at 11 a.m. The cost is $10, and nonmembers will pay green fees. There will be hamburgers and salad for $8 and an auction, with proceeds benefiting the high school golf team. For more information, call the John Day Golf Club at 541- 575-0170.
