King was one of 682 students to earn the honor. King had a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while taking at least 12 graded undergraduate credits. Jonathan Lawrence Olivera-Sanchez named to C. Oregon dean’s list Adilene Olivera-Sanchez of John Day was named to the Central Oregon Com- munity College fall 2016 dean’s list. Daniel John Cline March 18, 1949 - Jan. 2, 2017 Daniel John Cline, 67, formerly of Prairie City, passed away Jan. 2 at University of Washington Hospital in Seattle of acute myeloid leukemia, sur- rounded by his loving family. A private interment with family and a military honor guard was conducted at Ever- green Memorial Mausoleum in Ever- ett, Washington, Jan. 9. Cline was born in Prairie City March 18, 1949, to Lawrence L. Cline and Jean Bernice (Gillette) (Cline) Bowen. He spent his youth growing up in the John Day Valley and graduated from Prairie City High School in 1967. He enjoyed gold panning at his father’s mine, hunting and fi shing, was a sports enthusiast and loved playing basketball. After high school, Cline joined the Navy, being stationed at Lemoore Naval Air Station and then on to serve aboard the USS Enterprise — and was on board Jan. 14, 1969, when a rocket exploded on the deck, killing 27 and injuring 314, Cline being among the injured — and the USS Constellation, with service during Vietnam. After coming home, he was a recruiter for the Navy in Twin Falls, Idaho, and Grants Pass. His last assignment was to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station where he retired after serving 20 years with a rank of chief petty offi cer. After he re- tired, he volunteered as a referee for basketball and an umpire for softball leagues. He was an avid golfer, voracious reader and loved playing cards. His last fi ve years, he lived in Arizona, and he and his wife, Laura, loved dancing and traveling in their motor home. Cline is survived by his wife, Laura (Cooley) (Bennett) Cline; his daughters and their husbands, Trina and Shane Coe and Heidi and Jeff Haas; son Cody Cline; step-daughters Julie Dubravetz and Janelle and Jason Davis; seven grandchildren; his sisters and their husbands, Carol and Don Sass, Rebecca and Jack Bowles and Theresa and Victor Van Orden; his for- mer wife Shirley (Cartwright) (Cline) Leonard; and many niec- es and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Linda (Dubrabvetz) Cline; a brother Kenneth Frankford Cline; and his grandparents Frankford L. and Emily Mae (Martin) Cline and William E. Gillette and (Rose) Mable Stella Florence (Schwarz) Scriven of Prairie City. Jack Blondin Hood March 16, 1920 - Feb. 2, 2017 Jack Blondin Hood, 96, of Canyon City passed away at his residence at Serenity House Thursday, Feb. 2. Hood was born on a small farm in Golden, Texas, on March 16, 1920, to William Hood and Leitha McLeod. He was the son of a sharecropper and, at 16, opened a radio repair shop before attending the University of Texas and UCLA. He served in the Navy during World War II and was sta- tioned on the USS Astoria. He was present at the Battle of the Coral Sea as well as the Battle of Midway; he received special commendation and a promotion to warrant offi cer. During his time serving his country, Hood earned seven campaign ribbons and participated in the Bikini bomb test in 1946. Hood also served in the U.S. Civil Service, Naval Air Sys- tems Command as a missile engineer and was involved in the ICBM program for 12 years. Fern June Turner Jan. 31, 1921 - Feb. 9, 2017 Fern June Turner passed away Thursday, Feb. 9. She was born Jan. 31, 1921, to William F. Woodcock and Ivy L. Wise Woodcock. On July 18, 1938, she married Ellis E. Turner. She loved her yard, enjoying gardening, flowers and can- ning. Turner was preceded in death by her husband, a sister and one great-grandson. She is survived by her sister, Illa Wil- son; children, Duane Turner and Phyllis A. Turner; grand- children; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; great-great-great-grandchildren; great-great-great-great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
