Digital speed limit signs
mounted over a 30-mile
stretch of Interstate 84 be-
tween Baker City and La
Grande have replaced the
standard speed signs in that
area.
The new signs will use
traffic, road, weather and vis-
ibility sensors to lower the
legal speed limit when ice,
snow, fog or a wreck ahead
requires everyone to slow
down, according to an Oregon
Department of Transportation
press release.
Along with identifying
the current legal speed limit,
the digital displays can also
show the reason for a reduced
speed, such “ice” or “low vis-
ibility.”
The new variable speed
limit signs were installed this
summer and have displayed
the current freeway speed
limits for about two months.

Canyon City and John
Day have finally reached a
wastewater agreement.
Canyon City agreed to
pay John Day $5,528 to bring
them current on their pay-
ments and pledged to pay
$5,090 per month, for a total
of $61,080 per year, during
the Nov. 15 Canyon City City
Council meeting.
The agreement also in-
cluded a yearly 4- to 5-per-
cent increase for the next five
years, which will result in
Canyon City residents’ sew-
er bills increasing by about
$2 annually, according to
John Day City Manager Nick
Green.
Canyon City Mayor Steve
Fischer said the agreement
was mutually beneficial be-
fore the council voted unan-
imously to approve the agree-
ment.
The issue arose after fruit-
less negotiations between the
two cities in February. Can-
yon City had been paying less

than John Day had budgeted
to receive since July.
John Day City Manager
Nick Green attended an Oct.
18 Canyon City City Council
meeting to convey underpay-
ing for wastewater treatment
was unacceptable. Canyon
City Mayor Steve Fischer
explained the Canyon City
Council felt they were being
handed a bill without a clear
understanding of what they
paying for.
During the Nov. 15 meet-
ing the council also accept-
ed the town’s audit by Oster
Professional Group and ap-
proved a Christmas bonus for
the volunteer fire department,
and Mayor Steve Fischer said
he was willing to participate
in a Firewise council brought
forth by Sally Bartlett.
