The new signs will use traffic, road, weather and vis- ibility sensors to lower the legal speed limit when ice, snow, fog or a wreck ahead requires everyone to slow down, according to an Oregon Department of Transportation press release. Along with identifying the current legal speed limit, the digital displays can also show the reason for a reduced speed, such “ice” or “low vis- ibility.” The new variable speed limit signs were installed this summer and have displayed the current freeway speed limits for about two months. Canyon City agreed to pay John Day $5,528 to bring them current on their pay- ments and pledged to pay $5,090 per month, for a total of $61,080 per year, during the Nov. 15 Canyon City City Council meeting. The agreement also in- cluded a yearly 4- to 5-per- cent increase for the next five years, which will result in Canyon City residents’ sew- er bills increasing by about $2 annually, according to John Day City Manager Nick Green. Canyon City Mayor Steve Fischer said the agreement was mutually beneficial be- fore the council voted unan- imously to approve the agree- ment. The issue arose after fruit- less negotiations between the two cities in February.
