Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, July 6, 2016 A11 WEDNESDAY July 6, 2016 ODFW seeks public input on mule deer, elk populations Swim Team holds its own at fi rst meet Team competes in Lakeview on July 8-10 By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle Blue Mountain Eagle SALEM — The public can weigh in as the Oregon De- partment of Fish and Wildlife reviews management objec- tives (MOs) for mule deer and elk populations on 67 wildlife management units. A population MO is not the maximum number of animals a unit can support, but a com- promise that tries to maintain deer and elk numbers at lev- els compatible with primary uses of the land. The MO also factors in habitat availability, carrying capacity and the lev- el of damage to private prop- erty, while trying to maximize recreational benefi ts (hunting and wildlife viewing) and pre- venting the serious depletion of wildlife. Buck ratio MOs range from 12-25 bucks per 100 does, while bull elk ratio MOs range from 10-20 bulls per 100 cows. ODFW, which periodi- cally reviews management objectives, fi rst asked for in- put from review committees which included representa- tives from hunting groups, land management agencies, Oregon State Police and oth- er individuals concerned with deer and elk populations. These committees have al- ready looked at the MOs and offered their input. “We didn’t want to raise MOs to a level that is un- achievable, or lower MOs where populations are not do- ing as well so they could be achieved under current con- ditions,” said Doug Cottam, ODFW South Willamette watershed manager, who is managing the MO review for the agency. “There is broad support for maintaining or increasing the current level of hunting opportunity.” There are no proposed changes for most wildlife management units, but maps and tables at the ODFW web- site show the units where either ODFW or a review committee has recommended changes. For areas in or near Grant County, the map shows no changes recommended for the Northside, Murderers Creek and Sumpter units. ODFW is considering changes to buck ratio for Silvies, Malheur and Beulah units, and is consid- ering changes to population objectives for the Desolation unit. The topic was discussed at a June 9-10 meeting in Salem where the Fish and Wildlife Commission was briefed on the MOs. ODFW staff will review public comments, and the Fish and Wildlife Commission is expected to make a fi nal deci- sion at their Aug. 5 meeting. Before then, comments may be emailed to odfw.wildlifein- fo@state.or.us. The John Day Swim Team faced tough competition at their fi rst meet of the season June 24-26 in Prineville, and head coach Sabrina Howard said they held up well under the pressure. “This meet was against year-round swimmers, so to hold a candle against them says a lot about our athletes,” she said, adding several on her team shaved time off last year’s records. “Our kids persevered and did really well,” she said. “They represented the John Day Swim Team with fl ying colors.” The team travels to the Lakeview Meet July 8-10. Howard said she’s grate- ful to parents who help their children make the trip to Lakeview, where the pool was renovated two years ago. She said she hopes the participation levels increase Contributed photo The John Day swim team with coach Sabrina Howard at the June 24-26 Prineville Meet. for the July 15-17 Burns Meet.
