A6 Seniors Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, April 20, 2016 G RANT C OUNTY SENIORS John Day Seniors Alma Joslin JOHN DAY — On April 11, we had a nice crowd for a Monday. There were approximately 36 diners at the center, plus 21 meals delivered and 20 frozen ones delivered to shut- ins. Our lunch consisted of chili-smothered burritos, chips and salsa, Mexican corn and fruited Jell-O for dessert. Francis and Bon- nie Kocis, who represented Redeemer Lutheran Church, delivered the meals. These two also served us along with Buzz and Bobbie Gilmore. Buzz led the flag salute, and Francis asked the blessing. It was Linda Stoltz’s birthday, and to show our gratitude for all she does here at the center, we had a birthday card set out for all to sign. If you want to go to the Oregon Trail Electric Co- op meeting in Baker City on April 30, there are only a few seats left on the bus, so you better get signed up. Veanne announced her class “Living with Chron- ic Pain” has been changed from Wednesdays to Thurs- days. The first class will be at 2:30 p.m. April 21 in the library at the center. Nikky Essex won the Len’s Drug gift certificate, and Bobbie Gilmore won the free meal. On April 14, we had ap- proximately 56 diners at the center and 31 take-out lunches. There were also 10 frozen meals taken to shut- ins. Buzz Glass, his daugh- ter, Brenda, and Veanne delivered the meals. The Glasses represented Corner- stone Christian Fellowship. We had meatballs in home- made barbecue sauce, pota- to salad, carrots and dinner rolls, and since it was Na- tional Pecan Day, we had pecan pie for dessert. Margaret Glass and Mar- ianne Morris greeted us. Serving for Cornerstone were Zola Pike, Donna Mulder, Donna Johnson and Linda Sprouffske. The Rev. Levi Manitsas helped and also asked the bless- ing. Donna Johnson led the flag salute. Bank of East- ern Oregon furnished the entrée. Veanne announced there will be a candidate forum at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Canyon City Communi- ty Hall. It’s open to the pub- lic and free of charge. Come and find out what the candi- dates stand for. Veanne was then going to present Linda with her birthday card, but, as usual, she was busy in the kitchen. Dale Stennett won the Chester’s Thriftway gift certificate, and Maria Strom won the Valley View lunch for two. On Thursday, April 21, we will have cheesy chick- en pesto with pasta, and on Monday, April 25, we will have loaded baked pota- toes with chicken Alfredo sauce. Matthew 6:20 “Lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Monument Seniors Soo Yukawa MONUMENT — On April 12, our cooks, Ter- ry Cade and Carrie Jewell, made us some juicy pulled pork sandwiches, french fries, cole slaw and peanut butter cookies. I garnished my sandwich with barbecue sauce, mustard and the cole- slaw, and oh, it was very tasty. Thank you, ladies! Our greeters were Bob Blakeslee, Bodean Anders- en and Marva Walker. Bob led our flag salute, and Bo- dean made announcements along with the blessing over our meal. Linda Abraham won the Len’s Drug gift card. Both John Yeager and Larry Voght won free meals. We had a crowd of 53 guests attending and seven take- outs. We had many visitors join us for lunch. From Prineville, we had Dennis Dice, Tim Cross and Paula Cross. From John Day, we had DeLayne Dice, Mike Cross and Brantley Hall. From Prairie City, we had Har- old Preston and Jim Ham- sher. Theda Phelps also brought her grandson from Portland, Phillip Britt, for lunch. There is a Mother’s Day basket that is being raffled, so come purchase your tick- ets for a chance to win this for your mother! The first annual rum- mage sale of Monument is in dire need of donations, so please go through all your stuff and donate what you don’t need or use. It may be junk to you, but it could be treasure for someone else. The sale will be May 13-14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact Sylvia Cockerell, Judy Harris or Karen Stub- blefield for more informa- tion. Don’t forget, the People Mover comes every Thurs- day at 9 a.m. to take anyone who wants to go to John Day. You will be back home by 3 p.m. There will be a sewing class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, at the Senior Center. Bring your sewing ma- chines and a dish to share for our potluck. The class is free, and it’s a wonderful time of sewing, chatting, eating and women bonding time. There is a project that will be worked on for that day if you want to partici- pate. For more information, call Judy Harris. Otherwise, you can bring your own project to work on. We’d love to have you — the more the merrier! It’s al- ways exciting to meet new people who share a common interest. Mark 13:26-27 “And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glo- ry. And then shall he send his angels and shall gath- er together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.” Prairie City Seniors Rose Coombs PRAIRIE CITY — Hoo- ray! There are only three days until Evening of Enter- tainment. Write it down, tie a string around your inger, put it in your phone, iPad or what- ever. Don’t forget! We had a full house for lunch with 93 names on the registration book. Good show. Nine of those were from Val- ley View Assisted Living. Kim and Molly brought sev- en residents including Norma Rynearson. It was good to see them all. They made space at their table for Ivan Nance and his helpers, too. Lorna, Shauntele and An- gie brought Dorothy Blasing, Marylin Randall and Otho Laurance from Blue Moun- tain Care Center. They ha- ven’t had use of the bus, so they have had to push wheel- chairs these last two weeks. Now that is dedication! Lor- na won the $5 gift certiicate donated by Prairie Hardware. That was itting, wasn’t it? She deserves a reward, don’t you think? Mayor Jim Hamsher led the lag salute, and Jack Reth- erford asked the blessing. We had apple juice, sloppy joes, jo-jos, kale salad with grapes and super-delicious brownies. They had walnuts and choc- olate chips on top along with syrup. Oh, my. Our volunteers included Linda, Julia, Gin- ger, Donna, Lorna, Alaina, Molly, Bob, Harold, Ken and Frances. Works pretty good to have one diner from each table to serve the food. The problem is that we had 10 tables, and that made a traf- ic jam at the counter. So, if your organization would like to come and serve one day every so often and meet some neat people, just call Marlene Greer at 541-820-3537. It was a red-letter day be- cause we voted to purchase a brand-spanking new dish- washer. We had funds left over from the building pur- chase, so we can pay for it. That was our number one pri- ority. Now on to number two. The Grant County Jam- mers will be in attendance again on Wednesday, April 20, so get here early to hear them. I have been working on my little lower bed. I still have about 4 feet of grass to dig up, then see if we can ind some top soil to plant the seeds in. The poppies I rescued last year have survived the winter, and I’m expecting great things from them this year. The weirdest thing is that when I started digging in the area af- ter the rocks and bricks had been removed, I kept inding grape hyacinth bulbs. Hun- dreds of them, but there have never been any that came up and bloomed there before! Son Bert called recently and gave me this big, long tale about him quitting his job. And I swallowed it. Then he said “April Fool.” Told him he was a little late. Oh, well. Better late than never. His son managed to pull one on him, so I guess he thought he was entitled. 1 Cor. 3:18 “Do not de- ceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a ‘fool’ so that he may become wise.” Church Services In Grant County Redeemer Lutheran Church Come Worship with us at 627 SE Hillcrest, John Day 1 st & 3 rd Sunday Worship & Communion ...............................10 am 2 nd , 4 th & 5 th Sunday Worship ..........10 am Wednesday Evening Bible Study.......6 pm For information: 541-575-2348 Cornerstone Christian Fellowship 139 N.E.
