vacation for a dip in the Dead Sea during a recent
10-day trip to the Holy Land with his cousin
Nathanael Martin. The two will offer a presentation
at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the Mt. Vernon
Grange, sharing personal experiences, photos
and true life stories from their excursion. For more

Linda Bowling, accompanied by her husband,
Jeb Bowling, took the Eagle on vacation to
Lincoln City on March 6 to participate in the
Lincoln City Half Marathon. Bowling had a time of
1:54:52, coming in second in her age group and
placing 52nd out of 136 runners.

Miles Andrew Ashley
Michael and Nathaniel Ashley of
Dayville announce the birth of their
son, Miles Andrew Ashley, on March
4 in Bend. He weighed 8 pounds, 1
ounce and was 19-1/2 inches long.

Larson of Dayville, George and Bet-
ty Ashley of Wamic and Randy Le-
san of Turlock, Calif. Great-grand-
parents are Shirley and Alfred Sisk
of Prineville, Joe Larson of Dayville

Ian and Natosha McLeod of
Goldsboro, N.C., formerly of John
Day, announce the birth of their son,
Connor Leslie McLeod, at 7:59 a.m.
April 5, 2015, at Wayne Memorial
Hospital in Goldsboro. He weighed 8
pounds and was 21 inches long.

Faye Louise Elmer
May 1, 1930 — March 5, 2016
Faye Louise Elmer, 85, of John
Day, died March 5 at Blue Mountain
Hospital in John Day. A memorial
service was held on March 11 at John
Day United Methodist Church.
Elmer was born May 1, 1930, in
Portland, to Walter Guy Benson and
Helen Angie (Poston) Benson. She at-
tended Jefferson High School and, in
1951, graduated from the University
of Portland College of Nursing.
In November 1951, she married Carl Elmer. They divorced
in July 1990.
She was on the original nursing staff at Blue Mountain
Hospital when the facility opened its doors in 1960. She
worked there from December 1960 to September 1979. In
later years there, she served as a head nurse and director of
nursing.
After leaving the hospital, she worked for the Malheur Na-
tional Forest as a clerk from 1982-1997. In the early 2000s
until 2014, she was the secretary at John Day United Meth-
odist Church.
She was an avid football fan; her favorite team was the
Chicago Bears.
Survivors include her son, Dennis Elmer of Bend; daugh-
ter, Gwenn Roberts of Bend; grandson, Scott Elmer of Spring-
¿ eld; and granddaughter Rachael Leach of Beaverton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the John Day
United Methodist Church through Driskill Memorial Chapel,
241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.
Mary Lucinda (Masterson) Burke
July 3, 1935 — March 13, 2016
Mary Lou Masterson Burke, 80, of Fox, died March 13 in
John Day. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March
18, at the Ellensburg Presbyterian Church in Ellensburg, Wash.

Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church or the Washington Cattlemen’s As-
sociation Endowment Trust Fund through Brookside Funeral Home

spirit of volunteerism. Emphasis
will be placed on recognizing
those who have led in the cre-

March 25, at the Spray Grange,
from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.
This meeting will convene local stockgrowers
encouraging them to bring their ideas for the group’s
revitalization. Officer elections
and planning for the upcoming year will occur.

The evening will consist of a complimentary tri-tip
dinner, door prizes and great conversation with friends
and neighbors. We will host Cari Wade, DVM who will
speak on vaccinations, disease, and the importance of
pre-weaning conditioning.

Joann Johnson
July 20, 1922 — March 9, 2016
Joann Johnson, 93, of Mt. Ver-
non, died March 9 at the Elderberry
House in John Day. A funeral service
will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19,
at Driskill Memorial Chapel in John
Day, with interment at the Canyon
City Cemetery. A reception will fol-
low at the John Day American Legion
Hall.
Johnson was born July 20, 1922,
in Fossil, to Carl and Alice Hibner
Iremonger.
She attended school in Wheeler County and graduated in
1940.
On March 9, 1942, she married Elmer Johnson in Steven-
son, Wash.
She enjoyed gardening, working on the farm, feed-
ing birds and following high school athletic teams and the
Portland Trailblazers. She was a member of the Methodist
Church and the American Legion Auxiliary since 1946.
Her greatest accomplishments were raising four boys and
helping out on the ranch, as well as being active in the Amer-
ica Legion Auxiliary on the election board for several years.
Survivors include her sons, Lester (Georgene) Johnson
of Enterprise, Robert (Teresa) Johnson of Princeton, Donald
(Heidi) Johnson of Germany and Larry (Debbie) Johnson of
Joseph; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer John-
son.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the John Day
American Legion Auxiliary or Blue Mountain Hospice
through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd.
