A2 Family Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, March 9, 2016 O BITUARIES Milo Pope July 18, 1936 — Feb. 24, 2016 BAKER CITY — Milo Pope, 79, died Feb. 24 at his Baker City home. Per his request, no funeral services will be held. A private family memorial will be observed this month. Pope was born July 18, 1936, the fourth of ¿ ve children to Milo and *race Pope in Hoquiam, Washington. He was raised in Sutherlin and John 'ay. He graduated from *rant 8nion High School in 1955. It was in high school that he met his future bride *ayl Kilpatrick. On Nov. 20, 1958, they married in John Day and together had three children, Marcia, Kevin and Milo. In 1961, he began his law career in Idaho. He practiced in Twin Falls, Idaho, Milton-Freewater and John Day. In 1988, he was elected circuit court Mudge of *rant and Baker counties and subse- quently moved to Baker City. He enjoyed his time on the bench. He brought his empathetic and no-nonsense sentiments, which have left a lasting impression on friends and colleagues alike. After retiring, he continued to practice law, a profession that he enjoyed greatly, and acted as a mentor to many. He had great respect for the law, gave of his talents in many great ways and was dedicated to providing the best possible counsel to all those he served. He was an avid reader and a lover of language, often correcting his children’s and grandchildren’s grammar, or asking how to spell novel words. He was always curious about the world. He loved people and his community, serving on city council and writing many letters to the editor. He enjoyed woodworking, a skill he ad- mired in his father, and often spent time with friends in his shop. Survivors include his siblings, Beverly Nordquist, Bruce Pope and Nila Palmer; children, Marcia (Bill) Winter, Kevin Pope and Milo Dion Pope; and grandchildren *enevieve Ehart, Rebecca Adair, Melissa Winter, Thomas Ehart, Bill Winter and Mike Ehart. He was preceded in death by his wife, *ayl Kilpatrick Pope. Warm February follows cold January Snowpack much closer to normal than last month John Day Basin still highest in state Blue Mountain Eagle Snowpack in the John Day Basin is the highest in the state, but the amount dropped sig- ni¿ cantly since last month. As of March 4, basin snowpack was 108 percent of normal, compared to 141 percent last month. Snowpack at the Starr Ridge SNOTEL site, elevation 5,250 feet, was 12 inches March 1 — 87 per- cent of the median snow water equivalent. February precipitation in the basin was 70 percent of average, compared to 106 per- cent from Oct. 1 to March 1. Summer streamÀ ow fore- casts in the basin range from 91 percent to 114 percent of average. These forecasts also decreased signi¿ cantly from last month. Statewide, snowpack is at 92 percent of normal. The Mt. Hood and Willamette Basins, at 77 percent and 76 percent, are the lowest in the state. Most basins in the state are within 90 percent to 109 per- cent of normal. As of March 7, Canyon Creek at Thissels Ranch was at 5.31 feet, with À ood stage at 6 feet. Canyon Creek near Canyon City was at 5.05 feet, with À ood stage at 6 feet. John Day River near John Day was at 4.88 feet, with À ood stage at 8 feet. inches during February, which was 0.23 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation — at least .01 inch — was received on ¿ ve days with the heaviest, 0.34 inches reported on Feb. 14. The highest wind gust was 38 mph which occurred on Feb. 17. A memorial service was held Friday, March 4, at the Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn, Wisconsin, with Pastor Keith Vik of¿ ciating. Smith was born Oct. 28, 1925, the eldest of nine children, to Carl and *er- trude (Soderberg) Bergstrom of Mellen, Wisconsin. She was known as Lorraine most of her life. At age 13, she was one of the ¿ rst children to contract polio in the Mellen area. She met that challenge everyday of her life with a can-do attitude and always in victory. During World War II, she worked in the 8.S. Naval Depart- ment. After the war, she returned to the Mellen area, where she met and married Joseph Bailen of Benoit, Wisconsin, with whom she had three children. They spent the early years of their marriage in Milwaukee, Wis- consin. 8pon moving back to the Benoit area, they purchased a small dairy farm which they ran until he died in 1967. After his death, she moved to John Day, where she met and married her second husband, Willard Smith. They enjoyed ¿ shing, mushroom hunting and spending time with family. After 15 years of marriage, he died in 1986. She returned to Washburn, where she lived until her death. She loved country and gospel music, journaling and her family. Survivors include her son, James (Rose) Bailen of Washburn; daughter Mary (Jerome) Piff of Ashland; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; ¿ ve great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her eight siblings, Lawrence, Kenneth, Richard, Dennis Bergstrom, Arlene Fleury, Betty Butler, Shirley Buchanan and June Bergstrom; her husband, Joseph; and an infant daughter, Margaret Inez.
