A10 Community Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, March 9, 2016 G RANT C OUNTY SENIORS John Day Seniors Alma Joslin JOHN DAY — On Feb. 29, we served approximately 40 diners and delivered 20 meals plus 20 frozen ones to shut-ins. Lunch consisted of soft and hard tacos, refried beans, Spanish rice, and for dessert we had bread pudding. Our servers were from First Christian Church. Pastor Al Altnow and Rick Rhinehart deliv- ered the meals. Marianne Morris and Billie Bullard were at the desk. Ron Dowse led the Àag salute, and Pastor Al asked the blessing. Serv- ing were Pastor Al and Cathy Alt- now, Jan Ellison, Karen Barrietua and Ron. Cathy, Karen and Ron rolled silverware. Veanne Weddle gave a re- minder of the pie social on Thursday, March 10. Bring your favorite dessert to share. In keep- ing with leap year, our Cathy pro- posed to Al and he accepted to the relief of everyone present. Now for the wedding! Lorna Askew and Kendra Jos- lin brought some Blue Mountain Care Center residents. We were happy to see them. Margie Parker won the Len¶s Drug gift certi¿- cate, and I don’t know who won the free meal. On March 3, we fed approxi- mately 56 diners at the center, plus delivered 26 meals and 15 more frozen ones to shut-ins. The lunch was beef tips in gravy with noo- dles, pickled beet and onion salad, steamed zucchini, dinner rolls and then topped off with birthday cake. Just another great meal; they are getting to be a habit. Billie Bullard and David Pasko greeted us while Ron Dowse sold rafÀe tickets. St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, represented by Walt and Agnes Hall, furnished the entrée. Drisk- ill Memorial Chapel and Blue Mountain Hospice furnished the birthday cake, baked by Chester’s Thriftway bakery. Thank you to all of these donors. Without peo- ple like you, we couldn’t survive. The servers were from John Day Nazarene Church. Joel and Joan Tayles delivered the meals with Veanne’s help. Vicki Harri- son, Gina Lee and Dale Stennett served, again with Veanne’s help. Vicki led the Àag salute, and Dale asked the blessing. Vicki, Dale and Gina also rolled silverware. Veanne reminded us there will be no bingo on Thursday, March 17, and we will be closed on Monday, March 21. Come back on March 24 and check out the new kitchen Àoor. That will be our Easter dinner which will be maple-glazed ham, potatoes au gratin and a special Easter dessert. Reservations are requested; when calling, give the names of every- one who will be sitting with you. That will also be the day of the quilt rafÀe drawing and special door prizes too. It has been suggested that we number the tables. Anyone will- ing to ¿x the numbers contact Veanne at 541-575-2949. That and 541-575-1825 are the num- bers for reservations. A big “thank you” goes out to Carol and Wilbur Ashby for the donation of the cof- fee. March 2 was Bill Toop’s birth- day, and March 13 will be Wilma Bauer’s 89th birthday. Happy birthday to you both. Our head cook, Shay, had sur- gery on March 8, so he will be off for a short while. During this time, our very capable Lisa will be tak- ing over for him, so we are look- ing forward to surprises. I hope everyone who is willing will offer to help if she needs it. I believe this was the ¿rst time Jim Hamsher, mayor of Prairie City, has joined us for lunch. Wel- come, Jim; come again. Merrie Henry won the Chester’s Thrift- way gift certi¿cate, and Walt Hall won the lunch for two at Valley View. Thursday, March 10, we will have honey mustard chicken with baked potatoes. For dessert it will be the pie social. Monday, March 14, we will have chicken salad on croissants with veggie soup, cucumber/tomato salad and cook- ies. As the saying goes, come on down! Matthew 27:31 “When they were finally tired of mocking Him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on Him again. Then they led Him away to be crucified.” Monument Seniors Soo Yukawa MONUMENT — On March 1, we had hamburgers with all the ¿xings, French fries, maca- roni salad and yummy chocolate brownies with vanilla ice cream. Thank you to our great cooks, Terry Cade, Carrie Jewell and Heather Bowlus. W. Toop and Betty Richards won free meals. Paul Turk from Baker and Marion Fowler of Monument joined us for lunch. Our greeters were Bob Blakeslee, Bodean Andersen and Marva Walker. Bob led our Àag salute, and Bodean made the an- nouncements as well as praying the blessing over our meal. There will be a Homebuyers Workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m on Sept. 17 at the John Day Se- nior Center. Don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the ¿re department’s third annual wood pit barbecue on Saturday, March 12. Jerry Boyer will be cooking up the delicious meat, and there will be chocolate cake and of course some delec- table desserts up for auction. The meal times are 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Our sewing class had a fab- ulous time of sewing this past Saturday. Katie Johns and friend Teresa, of Fox, joined us. We had some delicious food shared by all for lunch, and of course Judy Harris had a fun project prepared for us to sew. I got there a little late due to having company, but I managed to get a little done. We get together once a month. All are welcome! I just love hang- ing out with these wonderful la- dies, and I am so blessed with all their knowledge. It is my lifelong dream of learning to sew being ful¿lled. It is an absolute delight to learn from and with these great ladies. I will let you know when our next get together will be. Bible Fellowship of Monu- ment is hosting a ladies night out at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, at Bible Fellowship. All ladies are welcome. There will be food, a speaker and a craft project. Hope you ladies out there come and enjoy some fellowship time and some women bonding time. Don’t forget to change your clock this coming Saturday, March 12! I actually do not like to “spring forward.” Ugh, messes up my whole sleeping, eating and waking up cycle. Whose brilliant (NOT) idea was it anyway? Easter is fast approaching too! I think it’s actually better than Christmas. Jesus died and sacri- ¿ced his life for us, while we were yet sinners. What a gift. What is the de¿nition of a gift? Some- thing given voluntarily without payment in return. What a won- derful gift given to us, salvation through Jesus Christ! Easter is a somber, solemn and joyous time. It’s de¿nitely a joyous time for me and my family. We are ever grateful for the Lord’s wonderful grace. Hope you all have a fabu- lous Easter! Isaiah 53: 4-5 “Surely he hath borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and DIÀLFWHG %XW KH ZDV ZRXQGHG for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.” Prairie City Seniors Rose Coombs PRAIRIE CITY — By the time you read this, Darn Silly Stu- pid Time will be three days away. Just thought I’d warn you. The delivery duos are doing good. Both sets made it back to the center in time to get a hot meal. Before the meal was served, we had a short business meeting to adopt the new by-laws that the corporation, site committee and new board of directors have been working on for two months. There were copies at each table so the general membership had an opportunity to read through them before the vote was taken. It was a unanimous voice vote to adopt the new by-laws. Step one is done. The set-up crew of Bruce, Buzz, Jim and Harold did their thing. We ladies haven’t ¿gured out why the tableware setting has changed, but we’re not complain- ing. At least the utensils are on the table! Buzz led the Àag salute, and Jack Retherford asked the blessing. We had 67 names on the book, and one of those names was of our mayor, Jim Hamsher. He visited with those who desired to talk to him after the meal. Our volunteer servers includ- ed Julia Davis, Ginger Kendall and Marjean Koser. I was the lucky winner of the Prairie Hard- ware and Gifts 5 in trade certi¿- cate. I changed where I signed on the book, and that was the number that was drawn. Go get another ream of copy paper. Our meal was juice (not grape, but I forgot what Helen said), spinach leaf salad with strawber- ries, bacon bits and a raspberry dressing, veggie and meat stew, corn bread and, for dessert, pine- apple upside-down cake with real whipped cream on top. Oh, my. Everything was so delicious. Thank you, Iva and Helen, for making such scrumptious meals for us. In doing more cleaning in the building, we have found some items that were given to the grange when the I.O.O.F. Lodge in Prairie disbanded. We found all the old record books of the grange since 1926 with all the old pioneer names. We don’t want to just throw them all away. We do have room now to store them, but would prefer they were in a more accessible and perhaps useful place. Any takers? We also found a nice hanging, hand-made bulletin board. It is an object lesson of our county, I believe. It was made of what was available, and it works. May not be the prettiest, but it de¿nitely serves the purpose quite well. So that’s where you’ll ¿nd a copy of the new by-laws, if you so desire. Lorna and Shawntele brought Dorothy Blasing, Lois Hill and Marilyn Randall from Blue Mountain Care Center. I think I can see buds on the old grape vine “stems,” so that answers that question. I got a gar- dening catalog the other day. Oh, the possibilities! Then I look at my poor gravel bed of a yard, and go do some latch hook.
