PORTLAND — Susan “Lynn” Brassard, 79, formerly of Prairie City, died Feb. 15 in Portland, from a con- dition related to Alzheimer’s, with her children, Todd and Tracy, at her side. A memorial stone will be placed in the family’s Prairie City Cemetery plot in her memory. Brassard was born Oct. 19, 1936, to Delbert Oliver and Evelyn Bertha Kimberling. She grew up in Portland and on a small farm near Hillsboro, graduating from Hill High. After attending her freshman year at Prairie City High School, while living with her paternal grandparents, she dreamed of returning to the upper John Day River Valley to live. She raised her family — children, William Michael Gro- ver, Tracy Lynn-Hiatt and Todd Alan Grover — in a young Cedar Mill neighborhood. She attended her children’s activi- ties, and volunteered at the Audubon Society of Portland and the Portland Zoo nursery in her late 30s and early 40s. She deeply cared for the environment and all living things — one of many moral values she imprinted into her children’s lives. After a divorce from a nearly 25-year marriage with Wil- liam Jay Grover, she moved to a small ranch owned by her parents and lived for the next 35 years in a log house on Deardorff Creek. She loved living there and kept busy me- ticulously caring for her house and yard. She remarried for 10 years to Dan Brassard and enjoyed their outdoor adventures. She continued living in the log house while she cared for her father and mother as they aged. After a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, she remained living in her house as long as possible with help from her son, Todd, and from her nephew and his wife, Shad and Diana Wood- ruff. In January 2015, her son moved her into a memory care facility in Portland in close proximity to his home and work. She entered a hospice program in January 2016, while able to stay in the same facility. She will be remembered for the love and care she gave. Cora Marie Stubblefi eld May 13, 1923 — Feb. 19, 2016 Cora Marie Stubblefi eld, 92, of Monument, died Feb. 19 in John Day. Stubblefi eld was born May 13, 1923, in Heppner, to Roy and Annie Louise Scott. The family moved to Top, where she attended Top School. She graduated from Heppner High School. On Oct. 1, 1941, she married George Stubblefi eld in Payette, Idaho. They made their home on the family ranch near Monument and raised their children along the North Fork John Day River. She drove the school bus for the Monument School District and later became postmaster for the Monument Post Offi ce. She received numerous performance awards before retiring from the Postal Service. She enjoyed her time with the students she bused and her patrons at the post offi ce. Her hobbies included cooking, stamp collecting, tatting, read- ing, keeping her diary and corresponding with her many friends and relatives. She maintained the same sourdough start for over 50 years and often delivered loaves of fresh-baked bread while checking in on friends and neighbors. She was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Monu- ment and a member of the Monument Grange.
