During their trip they also took a cruise to the island of Roatan, ziplined in Belize and visited the French Quarter in New Orleans. Longtime resident and advocate of veterans’ needs Jim Jerome of John Day has been named January volun- teer of the month at the Vet- erans Affairs Medical Center in Boise. Jim Jerome was born in Michigan. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in October of 1965 where he served one tour in Vietnam from November 1966 to No- vember 1967. Jim also served a three year tour at Rhe- in-Main Airbase, Germany. He was honorably discharged in December 1970. Using the GI Bill, he earned a degree as a Fisheries Tech from Mt. Hood Com- munity College in 1973. He and his wife, Irene, love to hunt, hike and travel. They have two sons, and one six month old calico cat. Both sons have served in the mil- itary. James is a commander in the Navy with ¿ ve tours to Iraq, and Paul was in the Army where he served in Af- ghanistan. Jerome worked for and retired from the Oregon De- partment of Fish and Wildlife in 2003. S i n c e 2011, he has been a vol- unteer for the DAV as both a driver and a dispatcher for Jim the John Day/ Jerome Burns area. As a dispatcher, he is able to work from any- where he has cell service; he has even been called while in Holland and Germany. He has served 2,178 hours and driven at least 7,500 miles getting veterans where they need to go. He enjoys volunteering for the joy he gets assisting the veterans and being able to give back and help the com- munity. He is a vital part of the Veterans Affairs/Disabled American Veterans Transpor- tation Network assisting vet- erans in getting to and from appointments when they would otherwise be unable to get the health care they need. Wednesday, January 27, 2016 O BITUARIES Ashley Westmoreland Sept. 30, 1922 — Jan. 8, 2016 HAPPY VALLEY — Ashley “Wes” Westmoreland, formerly of John Day, died Jan. 8 in Happy Val- ley. A memorial will be held at a lat- er date. Mr. Westmoreland was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Dix, Nebraska, to Ash- ley Westmoreland Sr. and Lillian Augusta Pieron. He met Dorothy Payne in Lin- coln, Nebraska, whom he married in 1942. He was a medic in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Minneso- ta where he earned bachelor’s degrees in law and business administration. The family moved to Oregon in 1953, living in Roseburg and The Dalles. In 1956, he began working for the Corps of Engineers in Walla Walla, Washington. He transferred to the U.S. Forest Service and living in the Gresham and Portland areas. In 1961, he moved to John Day, where he worked for the Malheur National Forest until 1977. They returned to the Portland area, settling in Mil- waukie. He retired from the Forest Service in 1980. He was an avid reader, enjoyed the outdoors, liked to dance and embraced life. He had a great sense of humor and curiosity for the world around him. He was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Eagles organization of The Dalles. Survivors include his daughters, Roxanne Barott of Medford and Lisa Baggenstos of Scappoose; grandson, Jeff Barott of Tualatin; granddaughter, Ashley Barott of Lino Lakes, Minnesota; and longtime friend, Patricia Wenz of Happy Valley. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Doro- thy; sister, Barbara Jean Elliot; brother, Layne (Skip) West- moreland; and nephew, Todd Westmoreland. Remembrances may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the care of Neptune Cremation Service of Portland. Wanted: volunteer drivers Cecelia Teresa Houck Volunteer drivers are needed to keep the Grant County Disabled American Veterans vans on the move. The free service provides transportation for local vet- erans who need to get to ap- pointments at medical facil- ities in Burns and Boise and Caldwell, Idaho. The pickup and drop off location is the John Day Elks Lodge. Currently there are ¿ ve drivers, but more are needed. To learn more or to sched- ule a ride, call coordinator Jim Jerome at 541-620-4486. BEND — Cecelia Teresa Houck, 79, of Dayville, died Jan. 21 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. A service will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at Dayville Presbyterian Church. Houck was born Dec. 13, 1936, in Denver. A full obituary will be in next week’s issue.
