CANYON CITY — Free throws were the name of the game Dec. 5 at Humbolt El- ementary School as the Elks Lodge No. 1824 hosted a Hoop Shoot contest for Grant County youth. There were 26 participants with girls and boys, ages 8-13, from six schools taking 25 shots each. Students from Humbolt, Seneca, Prairie City, Dayville, Monument and Long Creek schools competed. The winners in the various categories will advance to the Jan. 23 southeast district con- test in Prineville. From there, winners can compete in state, regional and national hoop shoots. Bob Van Voorhis, lodge secretary and Hoop Shoot co- ordinator, said the event went well with good participation from all the schools. “I enjoy working with these kids,” he said. “I see them come back, and they’ll get to where they don’t throw air balls and everything goes ‘swish, swish, swish.’ I’m happy to provide this for the kids because it’s fun.” Elks Hoop Shoot 8-9-year old boys, left to right: Eli Speth, first place; Charles Kreamier, second; Ethan Thompson, third; Jayce Hatley, runner-up. the +27 corn e r’s 6+7 EEK OF THE W Elks Hoops Shoot: 10-11-year old boys, left to right: Gauge Jenks, runner-up; Wes Voigt, third place; Michael Martin, second place; Talon Van Cleave, first place.
