SENI R PRAIRIE CITY – Well, this has been quite a week, hasn’t it? I think correspondent Soo from Monument said everything needing to be said, so I’m not going to Rose Coombs say anything but “AMEN!” And because there are so many things requiring serious consideration at times, I’m going to give you some things to let your mind have a moment of comic relief, to give it a breather, as it were. So here goes: Got dressed one morning and went about my business. Sneezed and attempted to get a tissue out of my pants pocket. Was having a difficult time doing that. What’s the matter here? Discovered I had my pants on backwards. The funny part is they fit better that way. Was doing some irrigating and a wasp flew up under my blouse. Didn’t realize it until I felt a little zap. Got him out and stomped on him. Two days later, daughter-in-law Agata told me what I should have done to combat the itching and swelling, and I quote, “Go next door and borrow an onion slice and put it on the area.” That’s what they have always done in Poland. Why would she tell me to go next door? ’Cause I don’t use onions. There are none in my house. When we came back from Bend the last time, it was 100 degrees outside. We had the A/C on, but my back was getting really hot. I was sitting on the sunny side of the car, but this was too hot. Finally discovered “somebody” had accidentally turned on the seat heater. They definitely have that switch in the wrong place. Feel better now? On to senior dinner. Our faithful four were all back in service again for their early morning set-up jobs. Our servers included Sandi Rennels, Julia Davis, Evelyn Sheets and Leone Meador. Buzz led the flag salute, and Bob Meador asked the blessing. Jerry Sheets won the gift certificate toward a meal donated by Chuck’s Little Diner. And Derrol Coombs gets to go the Prairie Hardware and Gifts and spend $5. We had 76 names on the book. There were peppers, corn, zucchini and dried beans to give away, also. Our meal included orange juice, spinach leaf and strawberry salad, smashed potatoes and gravy, creamed corn, roast pork, applesauce, rolls, and banana cake for dessert. The Blue Mountain Care Center ladies, Kendra and Patty, brought Dorothy Blasing, Lois Hill, Dollina Humphreys, Ralph Wilson and Darrell Pierce. Wednesday, Aug. 26, will be August Birthday Recognition Day. Iva said the meal will be special. It has been made known there are some children riding bikes around town who don’t have the means to access a helmet. So, the seniors are going to contribute a portion of the donations each week to a fund for this purpose. There is a can available for you to donate, too, on the registration desk. And speaking of the registration desk, I want to say thanks to Pam Howard for her faithful duty there. In order to be eligible for USDA senior program funds, we have to have an accurate count of the meals that are served at this center. She makes sure everyone gets “in the book.” Dan. 10: 21 “... I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth ... John 14: 6 Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life;” JOHN DAY – On Aug. 17, we had approximately 36 diners, with 32 meals delivered to shut-ins, by Rick and Becky Rhinehart, and Veanne Weddle. We had Alma Joslin Philly cheesesteak sandwiches with onion rings and three-bean salad. Lisa fixed a “hot dog on a bun” cake. It was really cute as well as delicious. Margaret Glass and Susan Fowle were at the desk. Ray Ricker led the flag salute, and Ron Dowse asked the blessing. Our servers were from First Christian Church. Don Porter and Billie Bullard helped serve also, and Wally Wedde helped set tables. What a great bunch of seniors. I think just about everyone pitches in to help with cleanup. Veanne thanked everyone for coming. She gave an update on the fires and asked everyone to pray for rain. She said, “If you have a favorite rain dance, please bring it Thursday and we’ll give you the floor.” Seriously, our prayers go out to those who have lost their homes and property. We had a few guests – KJ Kuhl brought her husband, Hank, from up Indian Creek, and Rick Rhinehart brought his mom and dad, Monty and Evie Rhinehart, from Silver Lake. Welcome, folks. Margaret Glass won the Len’s Drug gift certificate, and Norm Fowle won the free meal. On Aug. 20, we celebrated Senior Citizens Day, and boy, did we celebrate. Linda Stoltz, who is our hostess, did some decorating and passed out some old magazines that were interesting. While we waited for lunch, Peggy Neil played the piano, and Ron Dowse led a sing-a- long. Our lunch was pork pot roast with potatoes, carrots, onions and gravy, and fresh dinner rolls. Of course we had all the usual – milk, buttermilk, juice, coffee and iced tea. Then we had a birthday cake to celebrate all the August birthdays, made by Chester’s Thriftway bakery, and donated by Driskell Memorial Chapel. We served approximately 75 diners plus 25 lunches delivered to shut-ins by Jean Willey and Barb Baucum. Old West Federal Credit Union, represented by Jeanne Day, Cindy Streeter and Susie Brown, furnished the entrée, joined by Jeanne’s husband, Chet. At the desk were David Pasko and Billie Bullard. Isa Larkin led the flag salute, and Bob Meador asked the blessing. United Methodist Church members served, and as usual, a lot of people pitched in to help cleanup. Veanne announced there are forms here if anyone wants to donate money to the people who lost their homes, through Old West Federal Credit Union. There will be free lunches here at the center on Mondays and Thursdays for those who were displaced by the fire. Our guests were Amos and Helen Cardwell from Prairie City. They probably won’t be with us again soon because they are moving to Tigard. We also had Cindy Kalin and Shelley Whale from Heart of Grant County. Also, Bill Choate was a first-time diner who came with his daughter, Suzie Howard. Welcome, all you folks. Evelyn Ogilvie, Karen Barrietua, Bob Larkin, Don Caldwell and Jean Willey won extra drawings of flowers and scarves. Nadine Smith won the Chester’s Thriftway certificate, and Denise Seebart won the Valley View lunch for two. On Thursday, Aug. 27, we’ll have sweet-and-sour chicken, eggrolls and chow mein. On Monday, Aug. 31, it will be chicken-bacon quesadillas. Join us for one or both of these meals. Yup, you heard right. You know how I know? My dogs got sprayed full in the face by a nasty skunk. Pee-ew! I called a friend to ask for the remedy – hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and Dawn dishwashing soap. I had to wash their furry little faces, and they were not happy about that at all. Sometime in the next couple of days, we need to set a trap for it. I Soo Yukawa hope I don’t run into him when I go to water my garden. My adventures in the “country life.” For our meal on Aug. 18, we had some very yummy pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, French fries, applesauce and brownies. I was the midst of darkness. especially hungry that day for some reason and I’m not afraid to say I am so sorry for the many losses that the folks in John Day, it, but I wolfed that food down. Thanks to our fabulous cooks, Terry Canyon City and now Prairie City have had to experience. We, in Cade and Heather Bowlus. Monument, are still praying for you all out there and the brave Our greeters that day were Bob Blakeslee, Jimmy Cole and Marva firefighters and volunteers. On Aug. 23, we woke up to the whole Walker. Bob led the flag salute, and Bodean Anderson prayed the Monument valley just socked in with all the smoke. I don’t know if my nose is getting used to the smoke or what; I can see the heavy and blessing over our meal. Bodean also made the announcements. Bob Yukawa won the Len’s Drug gift card, Gus Peterson won a thick smoke all around but I don’t smell it very well. After we got home from church, we just stayed indoors. I have had free meal and Bob Cockrell won the Chester’s Thriftway gift card. We had Gus and Ture Peterson join us for lunch along with Linda my windows closed. I hope and pray that the fires will be put out soon. Fire out here in the great outdoors is the one thing I really don’t Walker from Roseburg. We had 47 guests and one take-out. like. Blech! I must seriously have a very delectable garden because I have had Ecclesiastes 3:1 “To everything there is a season, and a time to all sorts of wildlife visiting and some not moving on but have set up every purpose under the heaven.” 0RQXPHQW 6HQLRUV MONUMENT – When going through trials, it is good to reflect on the “Red Seas” that the Lord had parted for you and the many blessings that you do have.
