A6 Community Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, August 5, 2015 G RANT C OUNTY S ENIORS John Day Seniors Alma Joslin JOHN DAY – On July 27, we had a larger than usual crowd for a Monday. There were approximately 36 diners present, plus Ron Dowse and Veanne Weddle delivered 26 regular meals and 20 frozen ones. We had pulled pork sandwich- es on a bun, baked beans, cauliflower salad and, for dessert, Lisa made peach crisp. Working the desk to- day were Ron Dowse and David Pasco. Our servers were Susan Sintay and Car- oll Zerkle-Bygness, who is here from Nevada. They represented the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Caroll led the flag salute, and Susan asked the blessing. We were blessed with the presence of Lorna Askew and Jonie Jones from Blue Mountain Care Center, bringing Dollina Humphreys, Dorothy Blas- ing, Marilyn Randall and Lois Hill. Also joining us for the first time was K.J. Kuhl from Prairie City. Veanne announced a baseball cap has been found here at the center. It has “Hells Canyon Mule Days” written on it. If you know who it belongs to, please let them know it is here. She also announced that Pacific Source Insur- ance representatives will be here to answer ques- tions on Oct. 26. Please mark this on your calendar. Lisa Miller won the Len’s 'UXJ JLIW FHUWL¿FDWH DQG -HD- nette Sheridan won the free meal. On July 30, we had ap- proximately 40 diners, plus Shay Lewis, along with Buzz and Margaret Glass, who delivered 26 meals. We had a wonderful Mexican lunch, Mexican lasagna, chips and salsa, green salad, Mexican corn, and then Lisa topped it off with caramel apple flan. Jean Willey furnished the entrée in memory of her late husband, Bob. Working the desk were Margaret Glass and Billie Bullard. Buzz Harris led the flag salute, and Ben Leuthe asked the blessing. Our servers were Don and Deda Porter, Karen Barriet- ua and Linda Stoltz. Thank you, folks. Ron Dowse did the an- nouncing in the absence of Veanne. Admission to the fair this year is free for over 65 all four days. We had a couple guests: Elsie Huskey brought her friend, Tina Moser, from Alberta; and Virginia and Dale Stennett brought Kirk Landonburger from Nampa, Idaho. Welcome, and I hope I didn’t forget anybody. Margie Parker won the Chester’s Thriftway gift cer- tificate, and Jan Ellison won the lunch for two at Valley View. Thursday, Aug. 6, we will have barbecued beef ribs, potato salad and baked apples. Then on Monday, Aug. 10, we will have navy beans with French fries. Romans 1:8 “Let me say first of all that your faith in God is becoming known throughout the world.” How I thank God through Jesus Christ for each one of you. Norma Rynearson presented us with another check from Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe for $500. Thank you so much. This is a good example of what goes Rose Coombs around comes around. I think we will have a reprieve from it in the next few days. Cross- ing my fingers! The heat must have got- ten to me because after we got home from church, we had lunch, and then I took an almost three-hour nap. On hot days like this, I find it difficult to be moti- vated to cook. I have been meaning to bake a pie for days now, but I just hate to turn the oven on in this heat for fear of heating up my house that doesn’t have central air. I have been harvesting some round squash from my garden this past week. I must correct myself from my last article. The corn I planted is called, “Ear- ly Sunglow” not “Early Spring.” It looks like we might be feasting on some delectable corn in a cou- ple of days. Wahoo! That vile little gopher has now killed almost nine sweet potato plants. I must get him somehow. I might not have anything left to harvest if I don’t take care of him. Next year, I think I will try to use raised beds with chicken wire under- neath so gophers or moles can’t dig up. I also got to harvest our first cucum- ber. It was hiding, and I almost didn’t see it. I will serve it in some salad. We were missing a cou- ple of our greeters for ou r lunch on July 28. Bob Blakeslee has been out suffering from gout. Bo- dean Anderson had a doc- tor’s appointment so was not present. Marva Walk- er was our only greeter. She led the flag salute, and yours truly prayed the blessing over our meal. Our cooks were Terry Cade and Heather Bowlus. We had yummy pork roast, scalloped potatoes, dinner rolls, carrots and birth- day cake. There were 45 attendees and three take- outs. We had the pleasure of Sharon Falls join us for lunch after suffering a stroke a few weeks ago. Other news going on in Monument include Jerry Cowger taken to ICU in Bend due to some liver problems. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and Dinah. I can’t believe we are already in the month of August. Where does the time go? Before long, summer will be quickly over, and fall and winter will be fast approaching. I actually love the cooler weather, so I don’t mind. I hope my veggies will make it and ripen before the first frost. My toma- toes have just started bud- ding from their flowers. Oh dear. I’m hoping I will have tomatoes growing out of my ears. I’ll keep you posted. Joshua 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good cour- age; be not afraid, nei- ther be thou dismayed; for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest.
