Lenten service and soup lunch
• 11:30 a.m., Presbyterian Church, Mt. Vernon
This is the fourth in the weekly Lenten service series. A soup-and-
bread lunch will be from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m., followed by a brief
service. All are welcome. The March 18 Lenten lunch will be at The
United Methodist Church in John Day.
Gluten-free meeting
• 6 p.m., Elks Lodge dining room, John Day
The theme of this month’s gathering will be “comfort food.” All
are welcome to the free meeting.
FRIDAY, MARCH 13
Family Game Night
• 7-9 p.m., Grace Chapel, Prairie City
All are welcome – families, couples and individuals – to “Family
Game Night” at Grace Chapel. Bring your favorite board or card
games and snacks to share for an evening of fun and friendly com-
petition. The fun continues every Friday night through March at the

Community Garden work party
• 9 a.m.-noon, John Day Community Garden, 3rd Street Extension
Volunteers and new gardeners are welcome to help spruce up the
garden for the 2015 season. Bring work gloves and tools, if you have
them. For those interested in a garden space, the cost is $15 for a
5 by 10-foot bed and $25 for a 5 by 20-foot one. The work parties

Second Saturday Gathering
• 9:30-11:30 a.m., Outpost Restaurant, John Day
Kathy Rogers will present the theme “Wind, Water and Oil of the
Spirit of God.” Rogers and Lis Davis will offer music for the gath-
ering. All ladies are welcome. Complimentary coffee and tea will be
offered at the no-host breakfast.
Clay pigeon shoot
• 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Kimberly Rock Products pit
The event will include a variety of shoots, jackpots, Annie Oakley,
men’s, women’s and kids’ competitions, and more. The cost is $3 per
shoot. Monument School students in grades 5-8 will serve concessions,
with proceeds going toward their annual field trip. This is also the third in a
series of four shoots to win a Savage 17 HMR bolt action rifle. Participants
must be at three of the shoots to qualify. The best score out of 100 shots
wins. The cost for that competition is $25 for 25 shots. The last shoot in
the series will be on April 11. The rock pit is located at the 9-mile marker
on Highway 402 between Kimberly and Monument. Call 541-934-2143.
Church lunch, mission presentation
• Noon, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Canyon City
All are invited to a potluck salad luncheon in the St. Thomas
Episcopal Church Parish House. After lunch, Beth Spell will give
a presentation at 12:30 p.m. in the church on the recent Eastern Or-
egon Haiti Project, a mission which serves students and teachers of
the Hinche, Haiti, area.

Farm Bureau meeting

The agenda at the Grant County Farm Bureau meeting will in-
clude a discussion on Zone 1 land in the county. Other planned topics
include the promotion of agritourism in Grant County.

some “almost spring” shop-

Two popular events are
coming up this weekend at the
Grant County Fairgrounds:
the Almost Spring Bazaar and
the Strawberry Mountain Gun
and Knife Show.
The bazaar will be from 9
a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday in Keer-
ins Hall. Vendors will sell
items including crafts, home
decor, collectibles, jewelry,
art and other goods.
Admission is free.
The gun and knife show
runs two days in Trowbridge
Pavilion. Hours are 9 a.m.-5
p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-
3 p.m. Sunday. People can
buy, sell or trade such items
as guns, knives, archery
supplies, and camping and
hunting equipment. Those at-
tending will be entered into a
drawing for gun-related mer-
chandise.
Admission for adults is
$5 per day or $8 for both; for
youth 7-18, it’s $2 per day,
and for children 6 and under,
admission is one can of food.
Vendor space is $35 for a
6-foot table at the bazaar or
an 8-foot space at the gun and
