Apparently lots of dads and daughters were in the mood for a tropical theme, as this year’s Dad- dy-Daughter Dance drew a huge turnout to the Elks Lodge on Feb. 7. According to Kim Ward, pro- gram manager at John Day/Can- yon City Parks and Recreation, 138 girls plus their dads/dad ¿g- ures attended the popular event. “The best turnout yet,” Ward said. And they came from all cor- ners of the county: Monument, Prairie City, Dayville, Seneca and Kimberly, as well as John Day and Canyon City. Ward said the luau theme was a hit, and added the Elks Lodge was a great location for this year’s dance. The evening included danc- ing to disc jockey music, snacks, games, prizes and a keepsake photo. “It was a magical night for all,” she said. The event was sponsored by Grant County Community Coun- seling Solutions. EO Media Group Contributed photos This year’s Daddy-Daughter Dance drew a huge turnout from throughout Grant County. Mike Carr and his daughter, Clara, enjoy time together out on the dance floor. Emilee Mogg, left and Ashley Tipton are all smiles at the dance. Youth tour delegates picked Blue Mountain Eagle Two Grant County teens have been chosen to attend the 2015 Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., in June. Columbia Power Co-op selected Maya Thomas, a Monument School stu- dent, as a delegate to the conference. Oregon Trail Electric Co-op selected Dawson Quinton of Canyon City, who attends Grant Union High School. OTEC delegates also include a Harney County student, McKenzie Moulton of Hines. The delegates will join nearly 2,000 students from across the United States for a one-week trip to our nation’s cap- ital. The students get to visit famous his- torical sites, learn leadership skills, and meet with congressional leaders. They also create podcasts and digital photo projects as they learn about electric co- operatives and current issues in energy and climate change legislation. Dan Goldblatt and his daughter, Dani, make their entrance to the Daddy-Daughter Dance. A CADEMIC R EPORT • Carrie Lovemark graduated in December from Five Branches Uni- versity in Santa Cruz, Calif., with a master’s degree in traditional Chi- nese medicine. Daughter of Will and Kim Brown of Canyon City, she is a 2004 graduate of Grant Union High School and a 2008 graduate of the University of Oregon, with a degree in human physiology. She plans to return to Oregon with her husband this summer and start an acupuncture practice in Canyonville. SALEM – Oregon Capital Insider, an electronic news- letter covering Oregon gov- ernment, began distribution last week. Oregon Capital Insider provides specialized news for individuals and businesses that require a deeper under- standing of the trends, issues and personalities in state gov- ernment. The newsletter will provide timely intelligence and in-depth reporting de- livered to subscribers Friday mornings, and at other times as breaking news demands. Based in Salem, the newsletter is a collaboration between two family-owned media companies: EO Media Group and Pamplin Media Group. A team of veteran journal- ists produce Oregon Capital Insider. • Peter Wong is an award-winning reporter who has covered Oregon state government and politics for newspapers since 1989. Wong joined Pamplin Me- dia Group and the Portland Tribune in April 2014 after having been a reporter for the Salem Statesman Journal for more than 14 years. Be- fore that, he worked at the Medford Mail Tribune as that newspaper’s capital bureau chief. • Hillary Borrud joined EO Media Group in 2014 after seven years at the Bend Bulletin where she reported on city, county and state is- sues. Previously, she was a reporter for the Daily Press in Victorville, Calif. Borrud is a member of Investigative Reporters and Editors, where she received a Rural Computer-Assisted Re- porting Fellowship in 2013. • Mateusz Perkowski is legislative reporter for EO Media Group’s Capital Press in Salem. He has covered ag- riculture and natural resource issues for that weekly agricul- ture newspaper since 2006. Oregon Capital Insider brings together two compa- nies with a wide geographic footprint in Oregon. Pamplin Media Group owns 25 twice-weekly, week- ly and monthly newspapers covering Portland and its sub- urbs, as well as communities in the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon. EO Media Group includes nine daily, weekly, bi-week- ly and monthly publications including the Blue Moun- tain Eagle, Wallowa County Chieftain, East Oregonian, Daily Astorian and the Capi- tal Press. The companies created Oregon Capital Insider to counter a decline in indepen- dent news coverage of state government. “While statehouse news coverage is diminishing in Oregon and across the na- tion, our media groups have chosen to invest in increased scrutiny of state govern- ment,” said Steve Forrester, president of the EO Media Group.
