THURSDAY, MARCH 5 Lego Night returns to library • 6 p.m., Grant County Library, John Day The library offers a fun evening for youngsters, who can build Lego creations and enjoy a snack. The Lego events started on the second Thursday of the month, but switched to the first Thursday to avoid a conflict with the county’s Library Advisory Board meetings. Donations of Legos are welcomed. FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MARCH 6-7 ‘Art at the Airport” show • Grant County Regional Airport, John Day Local artists will display their works in the second an- nual art show. TUESDAY, MARCH 10 JOHN DAY – Let your taste buds do the bidding at the Grant County Library’s next fundraiser. The event, including a cakewalk and pie auction, will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the li- brary, 507 S. Canyon Blvd. Bidding for homemade pies and specialty cakes will start at noon. Lunch, which includes chili and cornbread with hon- ey butter on the menu, will be served for $2 a person. Extra cornbread will be available for $1 a slice. There also will be a liter- ary-themed cake walk, and children can participate in a cupcake-and-brownie walk. Proceeds will go toward purchasing printers to go with new computers. Saturday work parties, from 9 a.m.-noon, have be- gun at the John Day Com- munity Garden on the 3rd Street Extension, and will continue until the garden’s opening day, Saturday, April 11. Anyone interested is welcome to help with a variety of work activities planned to spruce up the garden in preparation for the 2015 season. Just bring gloves and whatever tools you have – and muscle power. New gardeners are wel- come; plots are available. The cost is $15 for a 5 by10-foot bed, or $25 for a 5 by 20-foot one. Work resumes on JD downtown project JOHN DAY – After a winter break, work resumes this week on the City of John Day’s Main Street and Can- yon Boulevard improvement project. The $1 million project, funded by a Transportation Enhancement grant pro- gram, is upgrading side- walks and lighting on the two main thoroughfares in downtown. Iron Triangle LLC, the contractor for Oregon Depart- ment of Transportation, began the work last September and most of it was done before the winter shutdown. Warmer than usual weath- er this month allowed ODOT to get a jump on the spring to- do list. Work to be completed in- cludes asphalt paving in front of the new curbs, replacing the sidewalk along the north side of Main Street, and com- pleting a few sidewalk sec- tions along the south side of Counselors help with work plans in John Day Blue Mountain Eagle JOHN DAY – State vo- cational rehabilitation ser- vices and counseling are available to Grant County residents through the Ore- gon Department of Human Services. DHS has assigned counselor assistant Teri Cain to a full-time post in Burns that also serves Grant County residents. She works with vocation- al rehabilitation counselor Fran Worden, who travels once a month from Bak- er City to assess John Day-area clients’ eligibil- ity for services and help them accomplish their vo- cational goals. Cain also assists Dee Dee Satran, a counselor who meets with clients in the Burns office monthly and formerly was in John Day. Vocational Rehabilita- tion is an employment ser- vice that helps the disabled achieve and maintain work. The program coor- dinates with other provid- ers, including WorkSource Oregon, Eastern Oregon Support Services Broker- age, VALUE Added Inc., and the high school youth transition program in John Day. Cain is available to make counselor appoint- ments and gather infor- mation to help clients interested in the services and finding work in the community.
