&r tf tmm .H 7 -r UQ DEVELOPMENT liMSUE NOTES' (Prom Our Portland OorBdpotuKnt i Work on the West Umatilla Ir rigation Project, will in all pro bability, be begun before Secre tary of the Interior Fisher re tiree from office on March 4th. Government engineers have di rected preliminary work so that construction may bo commenced within the next few weeks This project will Irrigate 80, 000 acres along die Columbia River in Umatilla and Morrow counties and the Government will expend $2,600, 000 r the work. From two to three years will be required to water the land in unit More than the required 96 per cent of privately owned land in the project has been pledged to bear the expense of development. Oregon will, in all probability, make a strong showing at this years dry farming congress. The immigration Commission has taken the subject up with the railroads and plans will be made early in the year so that a com plete exhibit may be prepared. Work on the Willamette Paci fic Railroad, the projected line from Eugene to Coos Hay and south along the coast, is being rushed and it is expected that trains will be running from F.u gene to Mapleton next Fall. It is thot the line to the coast will be completed early next Spring. Construction work is being push ed along the Siuslaw westward. Dates for Oegon Fairs next Fall were fixed at a recent con ference of the North Pacific Fair Association. Opening days were set as follows; Oregon State Fair September 29th, Med ford. Sep tember 10: Roseburg, September 15th. The Vale Chamber of Com merce is taking care of the boys of the city by allowing them the use of its handsomely appointed dub rooms twice each week. This is probably the first city in the state to take the rising gen eration into partnership in its de velopment work and is a move that is certain to have good re sults. The Pacific Fruit Association is the latest organization formed to encourage the best methods of fruitgrowing, packing and mark eting. The establishing of uni form grades, distribution of re liable market intelligence and affiliation with central marketing are among the objects aimed at. Fruit growers of Weitern Oregon are interested in the association and its headquarters are at Port land. Having succeeded in its object of settling the available land about Fort Rock, Klamath county the Loma Vista Homesteaders' Association has changed its name to the Loma Vista Development Association. Hereafter this or ganization will give its attention to developing its territory. Two new members of the Oregon De velopment League that came in during the past week were the Agness Commercial Club and the Pleasant Valley Push Club. Records By Mail Many people are taking ad vantage of the offer of Filers Music House to ship Cranfonola, Victrola and Edison records any where in the west without extra charge and guarantee safe deliv ery. This enables those living at a distance to choose from the immense assortment of the fresh, up-to-date records carried by Eilers big establishment. Lewis, Milaca, Minn., writes: "Chamberlain's Cough Remedy has been a needed and welcome guest in our home for a number of years. 1 highly recommend it to my fellows as be ing a medicine worthy of trial in cases of colds, coughs and croup. ' ' Give Chamberlain's Cough Reme dy a trial and we are confident you will find it very effectual and continue to use it as occasion re quires for years to come, as many others have done. Course Following is what one Eastern Oregon farmer thinks of the short course work at Corvallis and what the farmers of Harney county are to receive in this city n. i week. There is no tuition for this course it is free to all who caw to take advantage of it: "They can put money in your pocket if you only give them a fair chance," said W. E. Jones of Manela & Jones, Milton, on his return home from a short course at the Oregon Agricultur al College." "I was delighted with the course and found it very instruc tive," said Mr. Jones. He said also that the work being done at the college is of such a high class that many more from Eastern Oregon should be getting the benefit. "My greatest surprise was to tind that we have such a great institution of learning in our state, so well prepared to help the farmers, fruit growers, and dairymen especially, and so few from eastern Oregon taking any advantage of it "Our sons and daughters should be there and we should be there to attend the winter course. Some may not know the magni tude of that school. There are 88 large buildings, 120 profes sors and 425 acres in the cam pus, and about 1500 students in attendance, mostly from eastern Oregon and from other states and foreign countries. "They are surely doing a great work there and they tell me the interest is so great in agriculture that there is a demand for all their worthy graduates as teach ers and agriculturists on large farms. "In our short course work you can tak most any line of lect ures you want. I was most in terested in dry farming, farm management soils, seed eropa, forage crops and animal indus try of all kinds. We had eight hours of the various kinds of lectures each day, and many of them were illustrated with charts and lantern slides. Besides what notes we took, we were furnish ed a lot of type written notes and bulletins. "To mv surprise this course is rather inexpensive. You get all the month's course of lectures for only $1 and board and room is cheap, and you get reduced rates on railroads. Eastern Ore gon should have 100 to where they have 1 now. There is much there for the fruit grower. It il our instutition and we should use it. Pure bred young Barred Rock Cocherels. a new strain, for sale. Chas. Wilson. 10 tf. Petiloon for Liquor Licanea.
