J! da un b!( SU tlo DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE NOTES (From Our Vortlnuil Correspondent) A work more complete and au thoritive than any other statisti cal book ever printed on the re sources of OrcRon is now on the press and will bo issued within a week. It is the Oregon Almanac and will be printed by the Oro Kon State Immigration Commis sion, after the most careful com pilation. It will bo distributed to not less than half a million people all oyer the country who are desirous of learning more nbout this state and what it offers to the settler. The forthcoming book is one of 100 pages, with 20 pages given to statistical maps and diagrams. Great care has been taken to insure the accuracy of every statement made, so that it will serve as an absolutely correct authority for reference. The book deals with every phase of the resources of the state and will give a splendid idea of what the newcomer will find here, be incr Darticularly interesting to the farmer. There will be keen competition between dairymen exhibiting stock at the Pacific International Dairv Show to capture the two- handsome silver cups offered by the Northern Pacific and the 0. W. R. &N. Co., the former for the best cow over three years old, any breed, and the latter for best senior heifer in the show. These cuds are said to be works of art and will arouse much in terest Young men from the Oregon Agriculture College will engage in an oratorial contest at the Pacific Northwest Land Products Show, the subject to be Horti cultural Production of the Paci fic Northwest. A cash prize of $100 is offered. A large number of the O. A. C. students will also compete in the apple judging contest Japan and China want Oregon dairy stock for their farming districts. Japanese dairymen are now negotiating with Port land breeders to secure stock here and recently a high official of the Chinese Department of Agriculture left commissions in Portland for the purchase of dairy cattle to be shipped to that country during the winter. Now that the election is over, every section of the state is re porting business gains. The ef fect of the balloting was dis counted, it seems, before elec tion day and there was never a Presidential election that had such a small effect on business as the one just passed. Better roads will eventually re sult for Oregon even tho all that was desired was not realized at the last election in the way of good road measures. Some of the road bills did pass and friends of good roads work expect the beginning that has been made to result in a definite highway policy that will mean permanent improvement Is It Fact or Fancy Prof. Thomas Shaw, agricul tural expert for the Northern Pacific, tells the people of Ore gon that they have enough rich land in the central part of the state to produce more wheat than now is raised in the entire Inland Empire, and that this production may be realized by dry farming methods of cultivation. Profes sor Shaw is from the University of Wisconsin, whence they turn out men who know things and do things and especially along the lines of progress in agricul ture. Beyond that this gentle man is the agricultural specialist in the employ of a great railroad organizer and director, who with out doubt has paid more atten to agricultural development in this country, and with better re sults than any other man. If we have in this state a po tential area of wheat production so valuable as indicated the duty is ours to help exploit it and put it to the highest possible use as quickly as possible. We at least may determine how far that which is told is fact, and how much of it is fancy; and we might do this in such form as to help this particular area of wheat land into the market for the use of men who have the capital and the energy to take up dry farm ing where there is assurance of Reed returns. I To double the wheat crop of Oregon is no mean consideration. Even to increase it 50 per cent cent by tho use of land which has been regarded as of no value would be an object well worth tho best efforts of those who givd time and attention to state de velopment If wo are to trust Professor Shaw, and there is every evidence that wo may, tho area itself is one of tho most val uable assets in tho Btate. Wo may be sure to realize on it at seme day or other; but tho ear lier the day tho more rapid and satisfactory will bo tho growth tit thi sbitfi. Telotrrnm. tokt FRUIT RAISING PROVES PROFITABLE (Concluded From First Fngc) and get together on tho big things that nro going to make this the coming country. Every thing possible should bo done to ward tho plan of teaching tho coming generation soil culture. Our agricultural department of the high schcol should havo tho first attention of the people of this country. Nothing that will increase its efficiency should bo loft undone. It is money well invested and means more to tho future of tho interior of Oregon than any other matter now receiv ing consideration. A General-Purpose Horse- For several years farmers have been raising draft horses and useing them largely for general farm work. Tho breeding of heavy draft stallions has been stimulated by the active demand and high prices paid for this class of horses on tho markets; and no class of horses is more profit able for the farmer to raise for market than heavy drafters, but there is reasonable room for doubt about their being best for general use on tho farm. It is an undisputed fact that these heavy drafters are slow gaited, that traveling over the soft plowed fields worries them and that they can't stand tho heat as well as that class of horses that carry less weight A breeder of registered draft horses once .showed me a mare that weighed a ton, writes E. P. Snyder in Inter-Ocean. Running in the same field with her was a standard bred mare that weighed 1.300 pounds. During the spring plowing one of his work teams gave out and he put these two mares in for a couple of weeks, working them together and on an evener. He said that he was surprised to find that the standard bred mare stood the work much the better. The 700 pounds of extra flesh carried by the draft mare seemed a bur den for her to move over the soft ground and when the sun was shining hot she would heat up and pant and frequent stops had to be made to let her cool off and avoid danger from over-heating. For moving heavy loads on hard ground at a slow gait every body admits the superiority of the draft horse; but all farm work is not of this kind and for the general use the 1,300-pound horse has many advantages. The momentum given the plow and all other tillage implements, the binder, mower, loader, self- delivery rake, etc., by a fast walk lightens the draft, saves time and in every way is more agreeable and satisfactory than the slow plodding gait of the heavy drafter. These heavy drafters should never be moved faster than a walk. Any speed ier gait worries them, is not in their line and they cannot stand it. It often happens that the farmer wants his team to "go trot" as the Dutchman expresses it. On account of the machinery and implements with which the farmers are now obliged to equip their farms they have to keep more horses than formerly. For the extra heavy work threo 1,200 to 1,400 pound horses will do more work and do it easier than a pair of drafters that weigh a ton each. If tho farmer can't afford an automobile, these general purpose horses usually make pleasant drivers and will take produce to market or will draw the family carriage at a good gait without worry to them selves and to the satisfaction of their owners. Heavy mules from big draft mares are great sellers, but every man who has used mules and knows them greatly prefer those bred from medium-weight, standard-bred marcs. I am told that they have the snap and ginger whatever that may bo- that goes towards making them speedy pleasant workers, while big ones aro slow, lifeless and disagree able always. Any team, wheth er horses or mules, needs some thing besides avoirdupois to make them good, effective and proper workers and for the average farmer the lively, active, medium weight horse is more satifactory and profitable than tho slow, sluggish, heavy drafter. Pnradoxical, When a man is "tight" hoKen erally cuta loose. When a man is "tanked up" ho Ken,erally goes down. When a man is "crooked" ho generally talks Ills straightest. When a woman appears fn "ful dress" she usually isn't. Good clean seed fall wheat- sec Allen Jones. Admlnltlralora Nolle. In the County Court of llnrney County, Ortfjon.
