Vandcrlip, prcsl dont of tho National City Bank, Now York, and formerly an assistant to tho Secretary of tho Treasury, has handed out Reed adviso to tho Orcgonians this past week. Ho says ovory man should got a piece of land and he urges that now is the time to gel it Mr. Vandcrlip was entertained during tho past week by the Portland Commercial Club. Ho expressed great confidence in tho future of Oregon and says tho very attractive appearance of tho stato impresses him with tho wisdom of every man securing for himself and family n picco of land, for it will not bo n great while until a poor man will be unablo to get land. In discussing tho financial situation, Mr. Vandcrlip expresses tho bolief that business conditions in tho country at largo are taking a hopeful turn. He finds banks aro sound, crop prospects are good and there is general confi dence in tho future. The exploitation of Douglas fir will bo undertaken by tho man ufacturers of Oregon and Wash ington and a fund was set aside at n recent meeting to carry on a publicity campaign. It is felt that with such immense quanti ties of fir timber available in tho two states, it can bo given n much wider market in future. Latest estimates of tho num ber of new settlers who will come to Oregon during the pre sent period of low colonists fares place the figure at 35,000. Tho movement is said by tho railroads to bo the heaviest since colonists periods were inaugurated and while not all who come will be come permanent settlers, a great proportion will and eventually many who go back will return and make their homes here. A resolution standing by the legislative appropriations for the state educational institutions was adopted during the past week by the promotion committee of the Portland Commercail Club. The resolution demanded ndequate facilities for the education of the young and expresses the belief that the sums set aside by the Legislature aro not at all exces sive Checks are boing sent out this week to pay tho prizes just awarded by tho judges in the prize article contest of the Port land Commercial Club, which secured a great deal of valuable publicity for Oregon and the Pacific Northwest In all $5,000 was awarded in prizes among 80 successful contestants. An Ore gon man, R. R. Howard, won the first piize. Pendleton wants more daylight and may turn tho clocks ahead one hour on May one. This will give that city Mountain Time throughout the summer, and on October 1 the timepieces of the city will be set back as before. In this way, Pendleton people hope to make the most of the long days of the year. Invitations have been sent to Oregon people to attend the North Yakima Blossom Festival, April 15-22. At that time thero will be thousands of acres of orchards in bloom through out tho Yakima Valley and a visit will be well worth while. Var ious attractions are being arrang ed for the entertainment of the visitors. APPOINTMENT OP EXECUTOR. In tho iiinUnr o( tho lurt will mid oitato olQrcon Hudspentli, ilucontctl.
