The mighty power of the Uni
ted States under the mistaken
policy known as Pinchotism, is
placed in the hands of a vast offi
cial corps "of conservation," at
work in our newer states, "where
public land remains, to obstruct
settlement and bluff settlers out
of the country. All possible ob
stacles are thrown in the way;
homesteaders are pounced upon,
accused, and driven off. An im
mense bureau, maintaining hun
dreds of officials in Oregon alone,
is actually in the business of
driving out the newcomers whom
our promotion clubs and associa
tions are inviting and trying to
settle in the state. The poetic
gentlemen at the head of this
business of "conservation" evi
dently wish the winds to contin
ue to sigh through the forests
with no vulgar ear to hear them,
and our waterfalls to go on with
their roar, as ever since tho
morning stars first sang together,
hearing no sound save their own
