Gowan, Clerk. thing in tbe correspondence to indi cate in what reHpect actual home seekers will be given an advantage Last August Clerk G. G. Brown, of the State Land Office, wrote to the comtnissoner of the Genera! Land Office, inquiring how soon the department would take lilial action on the proposed forests reserves in Oregon and asking to be informed at an early date as to the botindries of the permanent reserve«. No sat isfactory answer having been rec eived, Governor Chamberlain wrote to President Roosevelt, complaining of the failure to get a satisfactory reply from the department and say ing that the State of Oregon earn estly desired that immediate action be taken. The President took the matter up with the Federal Land Department with the result that a number of tracts in the Wallowa and Blue Mountain withdrawals are restored to entry. Large contracts are being made in the prune belt of Oregon tor dried fruit. A million pounds have been sold to be shipped from Salem, the price being about 3 cents net to the grower. It I would seem as though that would be a profitable price for the dried fruit. As prunes can always be dried and are always staple, the grower is thus protected against a glutted market for the green pro duce.
