Tobacco is one reason for the great prepon derance of girls in the upper grades. It is pathetic to see bright and promising lads wilt and wither and fall by the way from excessive use of tobacco.” There is a good deal of truth in this assertion, for cigarettes impair the system and dull the intellect. Boys seek employment and, if they have an opportunity to earn a few dollars a week, they are willing to leave school to gam the money, while girls, not being in tended for wage-earners, can de vote their time to acquiring a better education than their broth ers.
