íimrs-Huraíd MATl'RbAY. APRII. » 1'JOI The Southern Pacific Company hauls all exhibits to and from the fair tree of charge, and a .very liberal rate is made on all other lines in the eastern portion of the state. The saloon men and merchants of Burns are at »word’s p >iu'.s. Quite by accident we learn T'lie saloon men asked the town that at least one of the big cattle council to pass an ordinance ;oni- concerns of this county is pre pelling merchants to pay a license pared for the leasing act. The saloon men and mer ing lands including all the water chants of this town are all very in that particular locality, would peaceable citizens and while they be gobbled up before the smaller may have little differences, there stockmen would know the law irf ho danger of bloodshed or any had passed. From what we can learn the proposed land leasing bill is more particu larly to kill the sheep industry than anything else. A sheep man simply could not pasture his stock and it would be a like blow to the small cattle and horse men. Don’t let them hoodwink you in to the idea that it is simply to keep out migratory stock. The supervisors of Madera county, Cal., have adopted the following plan for advertizing that county: 'They have entered into a contract with the proprie tors of Three Madera newspapers, in accordance with which each paper is to print each month three columns of matter on the resourc es and industries of the county, and mail to each person as the Suporvisors direct 300 copies of their paper each week. The pub lishers receive $25 per month each for the papers. This plan is adopted to attract energetic peo ple to the country to enrich it with additional wealth, and new enterprises, and to develop dor mant resources. We consider this a most excel lent plan ami if such arrangements were made in this county it would do more towaid settling it up than anything else ever suggested. In variably, when a letter is received here inquiring about our resources it is turned over to the newspupei to answer. We have always given such information as best we could. The people expect too much from their local papers. The teachers and school boards of the various districts in the county should give special atten tion to the observance of Arbor day. Too much cannot be done toward the beautifying of school grounds in this county, and the children should be impressed with the importance of planting trees and shrubs. We hope the teachers and school board of Burns will do something in that line next Friday.
