Blazers Continued from B3 “That’s what it has to be,” Lillard said. It was refreshing to see four players score at least 19 points for the histor- ically one-dimensional Blazers. And to see coach Chauncey Billups send Jusuf Nurkic to the bench on a night he struggled and find a winning rec- ipe with the undersized Winslow playing center. This new chapter of Blazers history is about honoring Lillard’s loyalty by putting a winning team around him and by reducing the need for his heroics. They shouldn’t need Dame Time to win night in and night out. “I have a history of coming up big in those big moments,” Lillard ac- knowledged. “And that’s not easy. Teagan Quitoriano is off to the NFL and Luke Musgrave is injured with one foot toward professional football, so Oregon State’s tight end position is in transition. But it’s not necessarily a bad prob- lem. The Beavers have made recruiting tight ends a priority under coach Jon- athan Smith. The position has talent, though without Quitoriano and Mus- grave, it’s young. And it hasn’t stopped the Beavers from using offensive sets that include as many as three tight ends, or break- ing in a true freshman in the passing game. The approach to teaching doesn’t stop for tight ends coach Brian Wozniak. But the results are different. “With a guy like Teagan or even Luke this year, it was focus on the lit- tle things,” Wozniak said. “With these guys, you’re learning to get better ev- ery single day. It’s pretty awesome to see that.” Wozniak’s first year as a tight ends coach was Quitoriano’s freshman year at Oregon State. The following year, Musgrave arrived after starring at Bend High. Five years later, Wozniak has developed a blueprint for coach- ing young tight ends. The lesson: don’t skip steps. Wozniak has learned as a coach, he watches more video than the players, he doesn’t assume they know. “You stick to the process,” Wozniak said. “It might be painful getting ev- ery little detail right, but it pays out down the road.” In the case of freshman Jack Vel- ling, the process is accelerating out of necessity when Musgrave went down with a knee injury in the Fresno State victory. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Vel- ling is proving he was ready. OSU eased Velling into action against Montana State and USC. He’s started three of the past four games and become a primary receiving tar- get. Velling led the Beavers with four catches for 63 yards in last Saturday’s win over Washington State. Velling has a basketball back- ground — his father Jerry played bas- ketball at Santa Clara — and it shows in his athleticism on the football field. What sold Wozniak on the recruiting trail was Velling’s toughness. While playing at Seattle Prep, Wozniak said, he watched Velling succeed as a run blocker against a ri- val defensive end, who ended up at Ohio State. “That’s what gave me the idea that this guy’s got the whole package,” Wozniak said. Even though Velling is putting up stats, he’s earning playing time — like third-year sophomore Jake Overman — by succeeding as a run blocker. “I always tell these guys the better we do in the run game, the more pro- duction is going to come open for us,” Wozniak said. Velling has added 10 pounds since arriving at OSU in June and now weighs 235 pounds. Wozniak said Velling will continue to grow over the next two years. “Sky’s the limit on what that kid can look like,” Wozniak said. “I think he can look at what you see on Sun- days with some guys.” With Musgrave out, the veteran tight end is Overman. The third-year sophomore plays more than any OSU tight end, with his most notable value coming as a blocker. Because of his knowledge, Wozniak finds Overman to be his most versatile tight end. “He knows his stuff inside and out. Studies his butt off when it comes to film, so it’s fun to be able to put him in different spots,” Wozniak said of Overman, who has four receptions for 35 yards this season. “When we show trust and guys have success like that, then their belief grows and they come through in those situations more times than not.” — Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers That takes a lot of energy and effort. Especially with my attention I get from the defense.” Even Wednesday, as he seemed to still be knocking off rust in his first game in 10 months, the Kings were trapping him at center court. Lillard showed trust in his new supporting cast on Wednesday and they rewarded that. “When we show trust and guys have success like that,” Lillard said, “then their belief grows and they come through in those situations more times than not. “There will be games, there will be moments, where I do what I do, but I’m not going out there trying to force that to happen.” The Blazers are still an imperfect team with an improbable path to contention. They have been open about the fact that this will take time. Other moves will need to be made before the team is good enough to re- ally make a run. But what fans want is a reason to think that it can get there. Some- thing to which the irrational and immutable faith of fandom can be attached. Winning the first game of a new era? That’s all it takes to start to be- lieve.
