That leaves the Blazers with a maximum 15 play- ers on their roster, which includes center Olivier Sarr, the only remaining player signed by the team to a train- ing camp contract. The 7-foot Sarr, who played last season with Oklahoma City, appears to have a strong chance to make the Blazers’ final ros- ter. He played considerably in the team’s final two pre- season games, during which he played ahead of fellow backup center Drew Eu- banks. The Blazers (1-4 presea- son) concluded their presea- son schedule Tuesday night with a 131-98 loss at Golden State. FOOTBALL Tagovailoa to return to practice Wednesday Miami Dolphins quar- terback Tua Tagovailoa will return to practice Wednes- day in a limited capacity. He will not play Sunday against the Vikings. Tagovailoa has been in the concussion pro- tocol since Sept. 29 when he took a hit against the Cincin- nati Bengals and had to be stretchered off the field and taken to a hospital. Tagovailoa hadn’t prac- ticed since then. He took hard hits in successive games, and the NFL’s con- cussion protocol was subse- quently changed to address the symptoms he had during a loss to the Bills. Rookie quarterback Skylar Thomp- son will start Sunday against the Vikings as Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater ad- vance through the concus- sion protocol. FISHING Men caught cheating at tournament charged Authorities say two an- glers accused of stuffing fish with lead weights and fillets in an attempt to win thou- sands of dollars in an Ohio fishing tournament have been indicted on charges of attempted grand theft and other counts. Forty-two-year-old Ja- cob Runyan, of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and 35-year- old Chase Cominski, of Hermitage, Pennsylvania, were indicted Wednesday in Cleveland on felony charges of cheating, attempted grand theft, possessing criminal tools and misdemeanor charges of unlawfully own- ing wild animals. They’re due to be arraigned Oct. 26. But the Oregon State red- shirt freshman admits the nerves and anxiety were there as he prepared for last week’s Pac-12 football game at Stan- ford. What helped was know- ing that his coaches had put a good game plan in place. The butterflies remain as Gulbranson and the Beavers (4-2, 1-2) get ready to host Washington State (4-2, 1-2) at 6 p.m. Saturday at Reser Sta- dium. “You need that to kind of fuel to prepare for that game. But it feels good knowing that I made my first start,” said Gulbranson, who added that the snaps he got in the final three quarters at Utah in re- serve of Chance Nolan a week earlier, his first extended play- ing time in an OSU uniform, helped him in preparation for Stanford. He did a lot of good things.” Gulbranson said he made plays when necessary. It’s uncertain who will start against the Cougars as Nolan continues his recovery from a neck injury. But Gulbran- son went back to practice this week focused on improve- ment. “I think that’s the mind- set I like to have, is a growth mindset,” he said. “There’s al- ways stuff you can get better with. There’s still a lot left on the field that I feel I could im- prove.” If Gulbranson is to start against Washington State, Smith said he’s looking for him to take a positive step forward from the Stanford game. Poor decisions against Utah led to two interceptions. Gul- branson was 12-of-21 passing for 177 yards against the Utes GOLF while leading the Beavers on three drives that resulted in field goals. But it was those live reps in a hostile environment that helped ease the nerves head- ing to Stanford. Gulbranson hopes to limit defenses’ sacks going forward. He said most of the four ver- sus Stanford were on him, now understanding that when pressure comes he needed to get rid of the ball to keep his team in good down and dis- tance situations. “There were other plays where I just got a little bit antsy in the pocket. I could have kept progressing and we had guys open,” he said. “I think that just comes with taking snaps, taking reps in games, staying patient in the pocket. That’s something on Sunday that I kind of had on my notes and coaches mentioned that I need to definitely work on.” Asked what else he wants to work on, Gulbranson said he needs to stay patient with the ball and work through his passing progressions, be more accurate with his passes and better understand situa- tions such as one that arose in the Stanford game and led to a penalty for an illegal player downfield. Athletes talk about the ac- tion around them slowing down during competition as they gain more experience. Gulbranson is making prog- ress in that direction. “With every rep you take, the game gets slower and slower. With your film study, your practice out here,” he said. “’You practice like you play, deliver at practice,’ like coach Smith always says. When you practice how you play, the game definitely slows down like that.
