The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condi- tion of anonymity because the team had not announced the signing. ESPN first reported the deal, which is expected to include $58 million guaran- teed and will keep him under contract with Seattle through the 2025 season. Metcalf is the latest in a string of top pass catchers to get locked up with new deals this offseason. He is entering the final year of his rookie contract after being a sec- ond-round pick by Seattle in 2019 and getting him signed was a priority for the Sea- hawks this offseason. Metcalf had watched during the first two days of Seattle’s training camp and head coach Pete Carroll said after practice on Thursday there was noth- ing new to report on the con- tract talks. I can’t ignore these voices.” He has been increasingly outspo- ken on environmental issues. “It’s one of the factors that defi- nitely played a role,” he added. “I un- derstand that part of my passion, my job is coming with things that I’m not a fan of, obviously, traveling the world, racing cars, burning resources. He won an F1 re- cord 13 races in 2013. Vettel became the youngest world champion at 23 in 2010 and later became the third driver to win four consecutive championships after F1 greats Juan Miguel Fangio and Schumacher, his idol. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has since won four straight. Vettel’s title bids with Ferrari were unsuccessful after promising starts were undone by driver errors. He led the standings at the midway point in playing through a foot injury for most of the season. His breakout season came in 2020 when Metcalf became a full-time starter and finished the year with 83 receptions for a franchise-record 1,303 yards receiving and 10 TDs, and was selected as a second-team AP All-Pro. Metcalf was set to make about $3.99 million in the fi- nal year of his rookie contract. Metcalf had been around the Seahawks for stretches of the offseason workouts while re- habbing from foot surgery, 2017 and was in contention the fol- lowing year, only to lose both cham- pionships to Hamilton. He crashed from pole at the Singapore Grand Prix in 2017 and swerved off track into the barriers when comfortably leading the rain-soaked German Grand Prix the following year. He was stunned when Ferrari did not renew his contract after he strug- gled to compete alongside newcomer Charles Leclerc in 2019, and again in 2020. “It’s sad. Obviously it’s going to be strange not to see Seb in the pad- dock,” Leclerc said. “I arrived the first year and I was probably very weird to him because I was just shy and didn’t know what to say. Now he’s a friend and he always texts me.” but was surprisingly absent when the team gathered for its mandatory minicamp in early June. The message was clear that Metcalf didn’t want his contract status lingering and he wanted long-term stability. Carroll agreed that a deal needed to get done before training camp arrived. And while that didn’t happen, Met- calf only missed a couple days of on-field work. Metcalf watched as Geno Smith took the first round of snaps with Seattle’s No. 1 of- fense on the opening day of Along with Hamilton, Vettel has also been increasingly vocal about human rights conditions in countries where F1 races. “I am tolerant and feel we all have the same rights to love, no matter what we look like, where we come from and who we love,” he said. His stance on protecting the en- vironment has also escalated. At the Austrian GP in Spielberg three weeks ago, he wore a T-shirt with “Save the Bees” written on it. At the Canadian GP in June he had the message, “Stop mining tar sands. Canada’s climate crime,” written on his race helmet. “I feel we live in very decisive times and how we all shape these next years will determine our lives. My pas- sion comes with certain aspects that camp on Wednesday. Smith getting the nod on the first day was expected and Seattle coach Pete Carroll again pro- claimed Smith as the leader in the competition with Drew Lock as the replacement for Russell Wilson. But the quarterback com- petition will be a long, drawn out battle expected to last throughout the preseason. Carroll didn’t entertain the notion of placing a deadline on when a decision needs to be made, highlighting the importance of the preseason games in making a final deci- sion between Smith and Lock. It’s the first time Seattle’s faced a quarterback decision in training camp since Rus- sell Wilson’s rookie season of 2012 when he beat out Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson for the job. For Carroll, the situation feels a bit like college again. “You guys forget that I coached in college for quite a while and guys graduated all the time. Heisman Trophy winners graduated and we went to the next guy,” Carroll said. “And you always miss when the guys leave. But you can see it and so you start planning for it, you work and you can find success. … I’m taking it in stride, but I’m re- ally determined to make it work.” I have learned to dislike,” Vettel said. “They might be solved in the future but the will to apply that change has to grow much, much stronger and has to be leading to action.” Vettel’s team is sponsored by Saudi state oil firm Aramco.
