Mikesell leaving UO women’s team for Ohio State
— Taylor Mikesell is headed back to the Big Ten and to her
home state. The former Oregon guard, who entered the trans-
fer portal on Monday, announced she’s headed to Ohio State.
The Massillon, Ohio, native averaged 9.3 points, 2.4 rebounds
and 1.8 assists in 24.9 minutes over 24 games with 20 starts
this season for the Ducks. Mikesell, who came to UO from
Maryland last summer, has two years of eligibility remaining.
She was one of three guards to leave the Ducks this offsea-
son, along with Taylor Chavez (Arizona) and Jaz Shelley (Ne-
braska), and all three ended up at other Power 5 programs.

Bradley leads after 1st round at PGA Tour’s Valspar
Championship — Keegan Bradley can’t recall having an
easier time than he did Thursday at Innisbrook. He missed
only one green. His longest par putt was just over 4 feet. It
added to a 7-under 64 and another great start in the Valspar
Championship. Bradley ran off four birdies over his last five
holes and a two-shot lead on a day of low scoring not typi-
cally seen at this PGA Tour stop. Riviera winner Max Homa
had eight birdies and was in a large group at 66 that included
Emiliano Grillo and Ryan Moore.

NFL draft

Goodell received plenty of
kudos for his hosting of last
year’s draft in casual wear from
his home.
On Thursday night, dressed
in a suit, he lauded the folks
who sit in the seats.
“We all agree over the past
season, one thing we missed
the most was all our fans,”
Goodell said.
“And we can’t wait to have all
of you back in First Energy Sta-
dium and every stadium across
the league this season.”
While Wilson was expected
to go to New York, Lance was
something of a surprise.

other factors that changed on-

Oregon’s Penei Sewell picked by Lions at No. 7
Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes found what he hopes
will be a cornerstone for the Lions’ rebuild Thursday, taking Oregon of-
fensive tackle Penei Sewell with the seventh pick of the first round.
Sewell, considered the best lineman in the draft, should provide
immediate help to an offense that ranked 20th in points scored and
total yards last season and has undergone a complete metamorpho-
sis this offseason.
The Lions traded longtime starting quarterback Matthew Stafford
to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and three draft picks in Janu-
ary and overhauled their entire receiving corps, letting Kenny Golla-
day, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola walk in free agency.
They return Pro Bowl starters T.J. Hockenson and Frank Ragnow,
along with most of the rest of their offensive line, but entered the
week searching for a No. 1 receiver and help at the right tackle/guard
positions.
Sewell started at left tackle at Oregon as true freshman and won
the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best lineman as a sophomore be-
fore opting out of last season due to COVID-19 concerns.

stone that he’s doing for his cul-
ture is the same stuff I was try-
ing to do for my culture.”
Knowing the history of Black
jockeys, Husbands is inspired
by Carmouche’s journey.
“When I saw the interview
with him two years ago, it bring
water to my eyes in terms of
how his wife is white, he’s Black
and he’s a little bit scared of his
kids on his streets,” Husbands
said. “It brought me home be-
cause he said in this interview
that no racetrack was being
prejudiced to him. … Now he’s
coming in to ride in the Ken-
tucky Derby. It’s like he’s shin-
ing a light out there.”
Husbands said Carmouche
becoming the first Black jockey
to win the Kentucky Derby
since 1902 “would be a bless-
ing. It would bring tears to a lot
of people’s eyes.”
The usually talkative and
confident Carmouche paused
several times trying to put into
words what it would mean to
follow the footsteps of jockeys
like first Derby winner Oliver
Lewis, Winkfield and Murphy.
“From my perspective, if I
win this race, it would touch a
lot of people,” Carmouche said.
“A lot of people will be crying, a
lot of people will be happy and
a lot of happy tears.”
