Donnie Wayne “Don” John-
son was born on Dec. 15,
1949, in Flat Creek, Mo. Raised
in Wichita, Kan., he did plays
in high school, then enrolled
in the University of Kansas as
a theater major. Dropping out
after a year, he moved to San
Francisco to attend the Ameri-

A Los Angeles stage role in
“Fortune and Men’s Eyes” led
to Johnson launching his movie

of Stanley Sweetheart,” and his
subsequent films included “The
Harrad Experiment” and the
sci-fi cult favorite “A Boy and
His Dog.”
After 15 years of continual
work on stage and screen,
Johnson attained major stardom
with the role of Detective Sonny
Crockett on television’s “Miami
Vice.” The character’s facial
stubble and pastel suits became
trendsetting, as did the show’s
overall style, and it earned John-
son a Golden Globe Award.
During his run on the show, he
also starred n a miniseries ver-
sion of “The Long Hot Summer.”
In 1996, Johnson began the
title role of the series “Nash
Bridges,” playing an uncon-
ventional member of the San
Francisco Police Department.
Consequently, he appeared in
the short-lived law-drama show
“Just Legal.”
Johnson’s TV work encom-
passes roles on “Glenn Martin,
DDS” (voice only), “Eastbound
& Down,” “Blood & Oil” and
“Watchmen.” Currently, he is
appearing in the NBC sitcom
“Kenan” with Kenan Thompson.
Movies in which Johnson has
been featured have included
“Zachariah,” “Return to Macon
County,” “Sweet Hearts Dance,”
“Dead Bang,” “The Hot Spot,”
“Harley Davidson and the Marl-
boro Man,” “Born Yesterday,”
“Guilty as Sin,” “Tin Cup,”
“When in Rome,” “Machete,”
“Django Unchained,” “Book
Cub” and “Knives Out.”
Johnson was married twice
to actress Melanie Griffith,
and actress Dakota Johnson
is their daughter. He also had
romances with actress Patti
D’Arbanville (with whom he has
a son) and Barbra Streisand. He
and his current wife Kelley have
