Raised in Wichita, Kan., he did plays in high school, then enrolled in the University of Kansas as a theater major. Dropping out after a year, he moved to San Francisco to attend the Ameri- can Conservatory Theater. A Los Angeles stage role in “Fortune and Men’s Eyes” led to Johnson launching his movie career with “The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart,” and his subsequent films included “The Harrad Experiment” and the sci-fi cult favorite “A Boy and His Dog.” After 15 years of continual work on stage and screen, Johnson attained major stardom with the role of Detective Sonny Crockett on television’s “Miami Vice.” The character’s facial stubble and pastel suits became trendsetting, as did the show’s overall style, and it earned John- son a Golden Globe Award. During his run on the show, he also starred n a miniseries ver- sion of “The Long Hot Summer.” In 1996, Johnson began the title role of the series “Nash Bridges,” playing an uncon- ventional member of the San Francisco Police Department. Consequently, he appeared in the short-lived law-drama show “Just Legal.” Johnson’s TV work encom- passes roles on “Glenn Martin, DDS” (voice only), “Eastbound & Down,” “Blood & Oil” and “Watchmen.” Currently, he is appearing in the NBC sitcom “Kenan” with Kenan Thompson. Movies in which Johnson has been featured have included “Zachariah,” “Return to Macon County,” “Sweet Hearts Dance,” “Dead Bang,” “The Hot Spot,” “Harley Davidson and the Marl- boro Man,” “Born Yesterday,” “Guilty as Sin,” “Tin Cup,” “When in Rome,” “Machete,” “Django Unchained,” “Book Cub” and “Knives Out.” Johnson was married twice to actress Melanie Griffith, and actress Dakota Johnson is their daughter. He also had romances with actress Patti D’Arbanville (with whom he has a son) and Barbra Streisand. He and his current wife Kelley have three children.
