'It won't last'
Mays says of
his hit splurge
CHICAGO (UPI) - Wondrous
Willie Mays had seven words
today to pessimistically de
scribe the best start he's ever
had with a bat in major league
baseball.
"Amazing, ain't it?" he said.
"But it won't last."
Mays battered Chicago Cubs
starter Dick Ellsworth for two
hits in three appearances at
the plate Wednesday, punched
another single off reliever
Wayne Schurr and finally
grounded out against' Don El
ston in his last appearance for
a three for five day.
The .600 performance for the
game, a 4-0 win for the San
Francisco Giants for their first
shutout of the year, elevated
Mays' batting average for the
season, 11 games so far, to
.488, tops in the National
League.
"I can't explain it," Mays
said cheerfully. "Sure, it's the
best start I ever had. But it
won't last. I know that. I don't
think I've ever gone through a
year without a slump, and I
won't this year. But it's amaz
ing, ain't it?" .

Not originally on the schedule.
the Tigard-West Linn meet was
secured after Coach Hoot Moore
learned that the Crook County
team had cancelled their dual
meet with Bend.
Prineville has only a four-man
track team, it was explained,
and does nofJiave enough men
to fill all the events. Prineville,
as a result, cancelled its dual
meets with Bend and Madras.
Through negotiations between
assistant coach Jack Lutz and
a relative of his at Tigard, the
West Linn -Tigard affair was
lined up as a replacement.

for Tigard, but if it rained the
meet was to be moved to West
Linn. Bend goes into the troica
affair somewhat of a favorite.
i'but'Bend coach Hoot Moore of-
Te'rdd that Tigard could give the
locals a rough time of it.
i-;WhiIe the tracksters are dash
ing 4n the valley, the Bend base-
bailers of Coach Bill Bauer are
at Redmond for a pair with
Coach Buck Kauffman's Panth
ers. Here again, Bend was the fa
vorite, but Redmond has always
spelled trouble for the Lava
Bears at Redmond, no matter
what the sport.
Bend, currently with a strong
hold on the Intermountain's
western division second place,
today was facing a nine that
was twice vanquished by cellar
dwelling Prineville last week
end. Neither coach was available
this morning to announce their
starters. Redmond may have
gone with Derald Parsons or
Ken Shortreed. Dick Hollenbeck,
Jim- Matson, and Mike Metke
were possible starters for Bend.
Sisters-Culver
Over at Sisters, it was track
time. Culver afforded the dual
meet competition. Culver, who
posted a narrow 2-point victory
over Coach Roy Runco's Sisters
track team earlier this year, of
fered today some outstanding
performers.
Among them was Rick Ur
back, a track dynamo who has
been a winner in the 100 and 220
sprints this year, as well as a
contender in some field evengs.

NEW YORK (UPI)-You have
to be flakey to go against the
big one-two punch, namely Hill
Rise and Northern Dancer, in
Saturday's Kentucky Derby.
It s a set-up which is a chalk
eater's dream, said citizens
being devotees of short priced
favorites. Because if one of
them doesn't win it then the
other one will have to bang
down first. -
But as a member in fairly
good standing of the knock
down the favorite chowder and
marching society I have to go
with an oat grinder named the
Scoundrel.
Now anybody whose cranial
cavity isn't packed with rocks
and who even faintly suspicions
the difference between class
and the brass of the others who
will go to the post can tell you
it s no contest except tor tne
big two. They'll battle it out
through the stretch and folks
will be lighting the kerosene

before the remainder ot tne
field ambles in for dinner.

A front-page story in the Ed

The Vancouver Canucks also

Arkansas while the Bees were

In other games Tacoma

Costen Shockley cracked a

its second straight victory over
Spokane.
The score was tied at 5-5 in
