'It won't last' Mays says of his hit splurge CHICAGO (UPI) - Wondrous Willie Mays had seven words today to pessimistically de scribe the best start he's ever had with a bat in major league baseball. "Amazing, ain't it?" he said. "But it won't last." Mays battered Chicago Cubs starter Dick Ellsworth for two hits in three appearances at the plate Wednesday, punched another single off reliever Wayne Schurr and finally grounded out against' Don El ston in his last appearance for a three for five day. The .600 performance for the game, a 4-0 win for the San Francisco Giants for their first shutout of the year, elevated Mays' batting average for the season, 11 games so far, to .488, tops in the National League. "I can't explain it," Mays said cheerfully. "Sure, it's the best start I ever had. But it won't last. I know that. I don't think I've ever gone through a year without a slump, and I won't this year. But it's amaz ing, ain't it?" .
