Two in a rOW ttSMumms Bend loses to Mac in shocker, 61-55 "You can't take any learn In this conference lightly," Bend Coach Chuck Hudson said today after the Bend Lava Bears dropped an unexpected 61-55 contest to Mac Hi of Milton Freewater last Saturday night. Hudson, who has always gone by that philosophy, now hopes his basketballers will. After losing a close 68-62 con test to the defending champion Pendleton Buckaroos Friday night, Bend waxed slow Satur day and lost to Mac, a team that was overlooked by pre season prognosticators. Now 2-2 in Intermountaln Con ference play, Bend was practic ing harder than ever tonight after a rather stern lecture from Hudson. "We should be ready for La Grande and Ba ker this weekend," Hudson opined. Baker Good La Grande, a team that won twice two weekends ago, took Its lumps twice last Friday and Saturday. Baker, on the other hand, took a belting from The Dalles last Friday for their on ly loss of the year. Bend's Saturday opponent, Baker, has been a favorite to dethrone Pendleton. Baker is well balanced, experienced and has a 20 points or better scoring ace in Mike Courson. "I hope the setback we took at Milton - Freewater taught our boys a lesson," Hudson said today, "and I think it has." Mac out - did Bend in all phases. The most glaring exam ple is in the rebound depart ment. Mac pulled down 43 bounders to Bend's 27. Bend was out-scored in all but the third quarter. Late Splurge Behind all the way. Bend sud denly caught fire and surpassed the Mac Pioneers in the f 1 n a 1 stanza. Bend, then, held a three point bulge with 1:29 to play in the game. Having gained the advantage on momentum, Hudson wanted his Bears to "keep it up." They stalled instead and lost the game. It all happened In the last 40 seconds. Bend missed on a 1-1 situa tion at the free throw line. Mac got the rebound, came down court and scored. Then, seconds later, Mac took another rebound and drew two fouls on a force play near the keyhole. When both of those went in, It was curtains for the locals. Things Revert After some prodding, Hudson admitted, "everything seemed to go wrong there at the end . . .we should have done better earlier." Mike VonDerAhe was high tally man for the evening with 17. Jack Ward and John Lund gren were high for Bend with 12 and 10 apiece. Culver clobbers Sisters, 63-39 Special to The Bulletin CULVER Taller men and more rebounds told the differ ence here Saturday night when the Culver High School Bulldogs dropped visiting Sisters, 63-39. Don Steinbeck and Stan Earn est treated hometown fans to some hot shooting from the out side. Both ended up with 10 points each for Culver. How ever, it was Rick Urback and Sisters' Wayne Rowe that dead locked for high point honors, with 13 apiece. Steinbeck, Urback and Ken Wollam pulled down 20, 17 and 13 rebounds respectively for Culver. Sisters bid trouble in that department. Sisters may have the same problem this weekend when it leaves league action and travels west of the Cascades to play Westfir and Crow. Scoring by quarters Satur day, shows that the Sisters quint was never in the contest. Culver led at the quarter 12-7, at the half 24-16, and 40-28 at the end of the third quarter. box score: Sitters (39) Rowe 13 Barclay 2 , Jacobsen 8 Burdick 3 Erickson 1 Scoring subs: han 12. Panthers lose to Buckaroos by 64-40 count Special to The Bulletin REDMOND - Coach Buck Kauffman's Redmond Panthers were back on the hardboards again today after gaining a 1-1 split at Milton - Freewater and Pendleton last weekend. Coming to town this weekend are the well balanced Baker Bulldogs and the unpredictable La Grande Tigers. Baker is a popular favorite for the Inter mountaln title, and the Tigers rate the "darkhorse" role. Redmond, now 2-2 in confer ence play, hosts Baker on Fri day night. split Again Last weekend was the second in a row for the Panthers to split a twin bill. The Central Oreeonlans topped Mac Hi at Milton Freewater Friday night, but Saturday saw the hot-shooting Pendleton Bucka roos gun the Cats down, 64-40. Pendleton, IC defending champions, was just too deadly from the outside. The Bucks connected on 26 out of 54 at tempts from the floor. "They were the best shooting team we've met so far," Kauffman said Saturday after the contest. Though Pendleton blistered the twine with amazing consist ency, the Bucks, "were not so hot on defense," Kauffman opined. "We got through for good shots plenty of times, but just couldn't hit them," he said. Bucks Get Rebounds Pendleton also prevailed In the rebound department. Pro gressive scoring by quarters shows the Bucks led the contest all the way. Pendleton was ahead 13-5 at the end of the first quarter, and 29-17 at the half.
