o Tte fcrftelU, Friday, December 13, WS A LOOK AT Season ducats offer exciting season .. . fSU by Web Ruble &jf?rvrxr-fjt Bulletin Sporti Editor"'1-1" lH''" ' If you are a basketball fan, why not get Lava Bear season tickets this year. Bend, for the first time in a couple of years, looks as if It has a "better" team. And, after cleaning up in the Central Oregon Tournament, it looks like the locals are in for an ex citing season on the maple courts. Tickets are on sale right now at Stover-LeBlanc's, 831 Wall Street. If you get them this aft ernoon or evening before to night's game with Klamath Falls, the season ducat, for a mere $8, offers you 10 home games. If you purchase one after to night, the ticket will be good for nine home games. Bend has nine conference opponents in a 10-team loop. Nina Loop Tilts Bend's Lava Bears have nine home conference games, i.e. . . .each of the teams in the In termountain Conference, once. Local fans will get to see de fending champion Pendleton and the favorite to replace the Eucks atop the heap, the Baker Bulldogs. Mid-state fans will also get to see Hermiston, another "red hot" that could turn things up side down. All of the eastern "powers" will make their ap pearance on the Bruin hard boards. Though some would have It known that the eastern half of the conference has the strength, neither Bend nor Prineville can really be called out of the run ning. Bruins Deep Bend, who won the mid-Oregon tourney In a walk-away, has plenty to offer opponents In depth and aggression. Prine ville, now bolstered by the re turn of some veterans that were missing during the mid-state tourney, looms to be an even larger threat. Locals Tough Bend and Prineville may prove dangerous to eastern foes, and to each other. Casaba fans can get in on the ground floor for what probably will be a photo finish. Season tickets assure the fan of seeing it. Tickets be what they may, other action is slated here in Central Oregon besides Bend's battle with Klamath Falls. Redmond left this morning for Forest Grove where the Panthers will engage in another weekend tournament. It brings together, Redmond, Forest Grove, Canby and St. Helens. Little is known about any of them, except Forest Grove, who after a two year "slump" ap pears to be on the rise again. Coach Buck Kauffman's Cats will play two games, one to night, and one Saturday night. Opponents haven't been named. Pokes vs. Sparts Over at Prineville, the Crook County Cowboys look away from their own conference and tackle a giant from the val ley. Corvallis, coached by color ful ex-Bend mentor Glen Kin ney, comes to town to fight it out two nights in a row. Corvallis, believed to be a lit tle on the tall side, will attempt to keep the valley's alleged "superior" hoop image for Kin ney his first year at the Spart helm by whipping the 'Pokes twice. If Corvallis thinks it will go home unscathed, it may be mis taken. Coach Wayne Lunde to day announced that Cowboy BE A SMART SANTA ...SHOP HERE Perty Tim GLASS SETS 1 89 From Deluxe TRICYCLES Most Siies OIL FILTER Only 99" Open Daily . . 8 Sundays .... 11 CLAUSEN'S 1 SPORTS E scoring ace Kim Christopher sen, a 6-3 forward center, is back In the lineup. Two others have donned togs, too. Two quarterbacks off the football team may see action this weekend. Jim Elliott, the passing quarterback, is fast, quick and has a good pair of hands. Greg Vernon has demon strated considerable ability, too. Neither, however, will start. Lund Looks Up Though Bend took the Cow boys' measure 70-44 in the tour ney finale, Coach Lunde shows no discouragement at all. "This is the best we've ever looked this early. . .and, with these ad ditions, I'm confident that we'll give this season a good whirl." Madras, like Redmond, plays away from home tonight. The Buffs don't play Saturday. To night sees them in action at Es tacada, a team that lost a cou ple of close ones last week to not-so-bad Newberg. Local fans will get to see the Buffs in action at home next weekend. Friday finds them in a return bout with Estacada. League action for all of the mid - state teams commences Friday, January 3. 'Ofttey' tiers sef to block Packers' title repeat hopes SAN FRANCISCO UPI)-The San Francisco Forty Niners, who have been off-key all sea son, sing their 1963 swan song Saturday when they attempt to throw a roadblock into the title repeat aspirations of the Green Bay Packers. It's the last regular game of the season for both clubs. The Forty Niners have nothing at stake except some of their jobs. But for the Packers, it's big business. If they defeat San Francisco they could gain the Western Division NFL title for the fourth time in a row pro viding the Detroit Lions upset the Chicago Bears on Sunday. If Green Bay loses, Chicago Cal still up in air over resignation BERKELEY, Calif. (UPI) The only thing which seemed certain about the University of California coaching situation to day was that nothing was cer tain. Athletic Director Pete Newell Thursday refused to set a date on when a successor might be named for Marv Levy who handed In his resignation Wednesday. "It could be a 1 m o s t im mediately or it could be quite a while yet," he said. Names prominently mentioned include Dee Andros, Cal grad uate who piloted Idaho to a 5-5 record this year, and members of the current staff, including all-time all-star pro guard Dick Stanfel, Jim Cullom and John Nikcevich. Meanwhile, Eddie Erdelatz, former Navy coach who was considered for the job qfour years ago before Levy was chosen, said he wanted no part of the job now. "I haven't been contacted but it would do no good," he said. "I'm not interested. I'm very happy with my job (vice-president of the California Financial Corp.) and I would never leave it for football." Newell and Levy both dis counted the importance of the alleged player revolt which some say led to Levy's resig nation. Newell said a meeting of players was held Tuesday and an unidentified representative came to him with the players' complaints. "I don't know the exact number of players who held the meeting.. .but I can say they did not come in with a 'fire Marv' attitude. They just had some things they felt they had to say and they did." Asked about his future plans. Levy said only "I haven't made up my mind yet what's in the future. I resigned for personal reasons. And I don't wish to comment further than that." Packers Favored iBut the chances appear to be slim that San Francisco can improve on its current 2-11 rec ord for the season. "We've got a chance In any game we play," maintains For ty Niner coach Jack Christian sen, who possibly could be re tained as head man if his club could pull this one out of the bag. He is looking back to the day the Forty Niners handed the supposedly Invincible Bears their first defeat this year. There are indications that the front office will do a house cleaning job on San Francisco at the end of the season. This could include Christiansen and his whole coaching staff. This also will mark the end of the long, long trail for Leo Nomellini, who finishes off 14 seasons in the NFL at the age of 39. Leo will be playing in his 174th consecutive league game. Joe Perry, one of the all time rushing leaders In the NFL, also will retire after this game. Several other Forty Nin ers are considering the possibil ity of moving to the sidelines, too. Linebackers Sidelined Two of the best linebackers in pro football will be watching this one from the sidelines. Packer Ray Nitschke is out with a broken arm. Forty Niner Matt Hazeltine is out with a leg Injury. San Francisco has defeated Green Bay only once In the last nine meetings, a 22-21 squeaker last year at the end of the campaign. The Forty Niner defenses ex pect to have trouble halting the ground game featuring fullback Jim Taylor, who needs to pick up only 49 yards to gain 1,000 yards rushing this season, and halfback Tom Moore. There's also the problem of quarter back Bart Starr's aerials to Max McGee, Boyd Dowler and Ron Kramer. Lamar McHan will do the signal calling for San Francis co and his passes will be aimed at Clyde Conner, Monty Stick les and Bernie Casey. There could be one record set by a Forty Niner Saturday. Tommv Davis will get his last chance this season to equal or exceed the NFL mark for con secutive points after touchdown. Davis has 154 straight conver sions, two shy of the all-time mark set by George Blanda when he was with the bears. The problem In this case is for San Francisco to score the touchdowns so that Davis will set his chance. The nationally televised game will be played under clear skies in crisp weatner.
