o o 'Needled' makes Iris point(s) 1 by Web Ruble Bulletin Sports Editor ,...,., m.A Happenings here and there A "needled hack can be sharp as a point getter. . .or at least that's what they're saying in New Jersey these days. The story appeared Wednes day In the Eugene Register Guard's "sports wire" shorts. It follows. Fullback Dave Nigra of Little Falls, New Jersey's Passaic Valley high school, may never again be as sharp as he was Saturday now that he's had a sewing needle removed from tus thigh. A doctor removed the inch' long needle Monday after a magnetic device was used to pinpoint it an inch under the skin. All uie e-2, zos-pound Ni gra did Saturday, with the need le in his leg, was to gain 174 yards and score four touch downs against Cedar Grove high. The needle became imbedded after Nigra practiced in a pair of repaired football pants with the needle still in them, unno ticed. "After practice last Friday, Dave came to my office with 10 inches of thread sticking out of leg," said coach Steve Gerdy. "He said he'd felt only a slight pinch and thought nothing of it." "We tried to ease it out by pulling the thread but it would not move. A doctor probed for tne needle hut could n t find It. So we had the leg X-rayed. It showed the needle was about an Inch below the surface. A sur geon saw it and said he could play." LIP'S RECORD SALES Cassius Clay, self-proclaimed heir apparent to the world heavyweight boxing title, has laid claim to another champion chip: "My record will outsell 'My Fair Lady' and 'The First Family' combined," the Louis ville Lip said. He and his entourage- made a one-day stop in Toronto Monday to tape two television interviews. Clay's record, a potpourri of songs and quips modestly en titled, "I Am The Greatest," has been appraised by critics Settlement set with Indians PORTLAND (UPI) -Fiflv-onc years ago a government survey or accidently short-changed the Klamath Indians 621,824 acres while mapping boundaries for the tribal reservation. , Thursday the white man paid for his mistiike to the tune of $2.5 million. El Nathan Davis, secretary of the tribal executive committee, announced the compromise set tlement with the Justice De partment which is still subject to the approval of the Klamath tribe, the secretary of the in terior and the Indian Claims Commission. " David P. Weston, U.S. tribal operations officer, said the gov ernment paid the Indians about 3 cents an acre for the land aft er the error was discovered. But in 1951 Die Indians pressed a claim against the govern ment on the grounds they'd been short changed. If the tribe's 2,133 members vote to accept the settlement at a Dec. 7 meeting in Chiloquin, it will mean about $1,066 for each member. Blaze destroys old lumber mill PORTLAND (UPD -A four- alarm fire, touched off bv an explosion, destroyed an old land mark lumber mill on Southwest Macadam Avenue here early to day. Two passershy turned in box alarm after seeing flames on the roof of the 800-foot-long building, which was in the nto- cess of being dismantled. The fire whs preceded by an explo sion, which brought "calls to po lice and newspaper switch boards. Twenty-seven pieces of fire equipment went to the scene. A nig storage shed which con tained an estimated 1,500,000 board feet of lumber was saved. Kenneth Condon, secretary- treasurer of the firm, said the boiler was being removed Thursday and the cause could ba oxygen used for welding. An adjacent Willametto River dock was destroyed by the fire. BWPY KHES GLASGOW, Scotland (LTD Glasgow officials said today y ka4 approved a request policewomen that they be alitwed to wear trousers dur- & the winter. I Ft ..., k player as not good but loud Accompanied by a valet, two sparring partners, a chauffeur and his 20-year-old brother Ru dolph Valentino Clay, Cassius continued his verbal assault on heavyweight champion Sonny Liston for the benefit ot assem bled newspaper men: "I'll hit Liston so fast and oft en he'll think he's surrounded . . .Liston doesn't want to fight me but he can't back out." And as he was about to leave To ronto, the Lip offered a dazzl ing revelation about himself: "I'm not just a clown. . .I'm doing it for money." SOUND FAMILIAR? Here's one that has plenty of meaning for us here in bend. It wasn't so long ago that they were right here, training on the high snow field of Bachelor Butte "You push yourself, after you're exhausted if you want to become an Olympic skier," Bob Beattie said Tuesday In Bould er, Colo. "This is what It takes to be great," added the coach of the United States Alpine team of downhill and slalom racers that will compete in the Winter Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria, January 29-February 9. The Olympians, who spent stx weeks dry land training at the University of Colorado where Beattie is ski coach, skied near by on St. Mary's Glacier and are now sailing down the snowy slopes of Mammoth Mountain in the California Sierras. Training Olympic skiers "Is one of the most intense athletic endeavors I have ever seen,' added Beattie. Beattie said any analysis of European superiority show their skiers well ahead in three basic areas physical, mental and technical. "If we are to whip the world's best," Beattie said, "we must start at the beginning the physical phase and be come as tough as they are." And those were just about his comments when he, Jean S a u b e r t and the Olympians were beginning training last August at Elk Lake and on Bachelor Butte. ROGERS BELIEVES IT One Bend resident In particu lar was impressed with Beattie and his comments about skiing. He took them to heart. He is Forbes Rogers, Bend High School ski coach. Remem ber that marathon goal of 10 miles a day? (Rogers said In October that his high school ski ers were going to have to get in shape. . .running up to 10 miles a day.) At the time his charges (girls included) were running up to seven miles. No. They never did reach 10. (Rogers really didn't expect them to.) But It got his team in the frame of mind where seven and eight miles a day were well within their capabil ities. They finished at eight. . . and when you stop to think about it, that's quite an accom plishment. Rogers has followed through on his "tapering oft" plans. Now the prep skiers are train ing (rather strenuously) two nights a week. On Mondays, the group runs three miles. On Wednesdays, Rogers has his charges inside for about an hour and a half. They do exer cises in the school gymnasium to strengthen their legs. They also work out on the trampo line. This, he explains. Is for general body toning and bal ance. Skiers work out on the slopes on their own during the week ends. Actually, Rogers has little to do with them then. As most of them are Skyliners, Skyliner Coach Frank Cammack handles most of their actual on-snow training. (It's easier. . .it avoids con flicting methods from two dif ferent coaches.) Rogers, how ever, will be with them during ski meets. DEFENDING CHAMPS Bend High School, mythical defending state prep ski cham pions, has three ski meets lin-ed-up for this season. On Janu ary 11, the Bend skiers will par ticipate In the Beaverton lnyi; lational meet on Multorpor at Government tamp, March 8 will see the Lava Bear skiers hosting the annual Dartmouth Cup competition on Bachelor Butte. It is still await ing official sanction from the OSAA as the state prep ski championships. Bend has won it tne last three vears. A third meet, the Catlln Ga ble Invitational, will be held back on Multorpor at Govern ment tamp. No date has been set, however. (Catlin Gable Is a private Portland high school that goes In heavy for skiing.) Bend's team has 12 members. Three of them comprise a girls' team: Karen Skjersaa, Sherry Blann and Sara Goodrich. Three members are required for a girls' squad. Were one of the Bend girls to la removed from action through Injury. It would eliminate the girls' team.
