OF BEND Norman Coffelt f ' ' "'1 vH"!iT:''-l'iUWI"'."."-'' ' 'tf The other night over television I heard the word Serendipity used or rather a contestant was asked to define it. I had only run across the word once before and that was in a rather silly poem by Ogden Nash. I used to be an Eng lish teacher so naturally I can never let a really strange word get by me without having it plague my conscience until I have to stop and look it up. Well, I am glad I did look this up. Serendipity means "something good come out of something ap parently bad". For instance, if one were to miss his plane it would seem to be a bad thing, but if it then turned out that the plane subsequently crashed, that would be, as far as you were con cerned, Serendipity. Incidentally, you won't find this word defined except in a large dictionary my Webster's Collegiate didn't have it, and I had to find it in the large dictionary in the library. All of us have this sort of exper ience where misfortune becomes the source of something very good. And when this sort of thing happens to us, when either by our own efforts or by our good for tune a set-back is converted to an advance, it is especially welcome because of its unexpectedness. The TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH JOHN ADAMS BRIGHT, RECTOR word Serendipity may be relative ly new, but the idea is certainly not, either to us or to literature. Some of you may be Shakespeare fans; and if so you may remember that this was an occasional theme of his. For instance in the 2nd act of "As You Like It", the good Duke, who has been treacherous ly banished and is hiding with a band of followers in a cave be gins to recognize that through this adversity he has come to gain an appreciation of the simple, hard life of the outdoors as against the falseness and pomp of the court life he had known. He says of the harsh cold wind that even as it makes him shiver with cold, he can smile and say "This is no flattery; these are counsel lors that feelingly persuade me what I am. Sweet are the uses of adversity . . . ." I would be curious to know how many can attribute the great ad vances in their life, the great moments of growth, a time of sudden insight never before be held, to an event which by all rights was bad, not good per haps even a tragedy. So many of the people whom I know gave Christianity a try be cause of some problem that faced them seemed to destroy all their own strength and resources. Peo ple with marriage problems, for example, threatened by tragedy, out of this great unhappiness, find the Church and consequent ly, a whole new way of life; and long after the immediate problem is overcome, they are still reaping the rewards of new insight and knowledge which they have been granted in the process of meeting that trial. So, when you are thankful that things are going well, think back upon the trials and hardships of this life and be thankful for them, too. For out of them have come your greatest opportunities for new insights and maturity. And thank God that his Holy Spirit has given you the sense to see the value of these adversities their true value. Thank your God that you are given the power to trans late the "stubborness of nature" as did the Duke. Thank God that He has seen fit to make this so; and that out of what should have been the greatest tragedy of all, when man crucified his Lord up on the cross, God saw fit to make out of this a source of salvation for all men. I think this word Serendipity is an eminently Christian Word. YOUNG EQUIPMENT CO.
