West Side." starring that exemplary actor, George C. Scott, as a social worker. 1 start on this hopeful note de spite the fact the debut came eye ball to eyeball with a rough theme whether a prostitute who is about to reform is still, per se, a morally unfit mother and, unfortunately, blinked. The show begged off from Apology offered in Negro case BERKELEY, Calif. (UPD-The group sponsoring the national foot ball queen contest today apolo gized to a University of California Negro student who was replaced as a contest escort because of his race. The Berkeley Junior Chamber of Commerce issued the apology after a hurriedly-called meeting and pledged "we will make every effort now and in the future to see that an incident of this sort does not occur again." The incident came to light fol lowing the climax of the contest Saturday when queen contestants were presented during halftime ceremonies of the California-Iowa Stata football game. A University of California honor society. The Californians, was asked by the Jaycees to select nine escorts for the contestants. Lynn Sims, 20, a Negro, was among the honor society mem bers selected for escort duty. Two hours before the event. however, contest officials report ed some queen contestants from Southern universities objected to Sims' presence and asked that the Negro be replaced by a white student. The Californians com plied with the request but later protested the action to university officials. The formal statement issued by the Jaycees expressed the organ ization's regret "for the embar rassment caused Mr. Sims, the University of California and all others concerned." Accidents take lives of two By United Prs International Two persons were killed in traf fic accidents in Oregon Monday. Lionel Caven, 25, Portland, died when his car went off a street and slammed Into a bank in Northeast Portland Monday night. He was dead on arrival at Eman uel Hospital in Portland. Mike Hafner, 78, Walla Walla, Wash., lost his life in a two-car, head-on collision on U.S. Highway 30, 10 miles west of Boardman In Morrow County. He died en route to a hospital at Hermiston. grappling with this central issue by having the lady in question get drunk and return to her apartment with a man in tow, with all neighbors looking on, thereby leaving no question she would lose her baby in court, which she did. It is true that a motivation for her action was provided a wrenching street scene in which she and her child were the targets of vicious neigh bors. Nevertheless, it seems fair to argue that a woman so con cerned with keeping her baby would summon all her will power to fend off such a stupid action. The script, therefore, begged the question. There were, however, a num ber of reasons to recommend the debut, and to hold hope for the series' future. It had a viewpoint that even the lowest social out cast is, after all, a human being and there are far worse mes sages than that. Another huge plus for the scr ies is, of course, Scott. In Mon day night's episode, the central role was that of the lady of the evening and the star was there fore Carol Rossen, who played it excellently. However, Scott's pres ence was felt throughout. He is a gentleman, a real one, with a definable face unlike Hollywood's faceless wonders; and he has irony, skepticism, humanity and toughness. He even showed a touch of what the series will need most the humor that is pres ent in all human situations, in other words a recognition of the everyday comedy that gave the late and lamented "Naked City" series such distinction, and set the pace for "East Side, West Side" to match. The final scene. In which Miss Rossen must turn over her baby in her apartment to the authori ties, was exquisitely done. Th Channel Swim: William Talman, the prosecutor on "Per ry Mason, plavs a gunman on CBS-TVs "Gunsmoke" Oct. 12. . . Boxer Archie Moore has a dra matic role on "Perry Mason" Oct. 17. . .Ex-heavyweicht champ Rocky Marciano guests on ABC- TV's "Combat" next Tuesday. ABC-TV has admitted flatly it will not use Pete Seeger on its folksinging "Hootenanny series liecause of his controversial polit ical past. . .Some leading folksing ers, such as Joan Baez, have re fused to appear on the show be cause of the network's stand. CBS-TV's "Look Up and Live." starting Oct. 13, offers a four part drama depicting contrasting reactions of various persons to the racial question. . .ABC-TV's "Ben Casey" for Oct. 2 stars Sammy Davis Jr. as a baseball player caught up ffi the race issue. The "Amos 'n' Andy" series, of which some Negroes disap prove on the grounds it uses ex aggerated stereotypes, has been sold to stations in Western Ni geria and Kenya. . .Tho National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is not happy about It.
