These are the words of Coach Frank Good at Madras. "As a matter of fact, we're hoping to be right in there." Good Is confi dent this year that his White Buf falo charges, only their second year in A-l competition, are go ing to be much better than in 1962. "1 like our speed. . .1 like our spirit." he said. Good pointed out this year nobody is that much better than anyone else 'in the Intermountain Conference) that they can t be knocked over by somebody. Coach Good's Madras football ers open their season tonight at home, as do all the other Central Oregon schools in the 1C. save Bend. Madras faces the danger ous wide-open La Grande Tigers who will bring to town a variable offense under new coach George Tallchief. La Grande may have the pass ing. Madras has the backs. As matter of fact. Coach Good Is blessed with two quarter backs who could just about be the best in the Central Oregon section of the conference. At fullback he has 'em five dep "This is really s 0 m e t h I n g." Good said today. "I've got this tremendous compe tition for fullback going, and I can utilize the surplus just about anywhere." Good's biggest problem seems to be his line. And it isn't really hurting. He and his assistants want to get a little more speed out of the tackles. Though they react quickly, they are a little slower than Good would like to see them. "We'll be better on de fense than olfeiise in the line," Good pointed out. Steve Summers. Fred Graves and Harold Smith will help the White Buffaloes con siderably on defense. On offense against the Tigers. Good plans to go with Graves and Summers. Four lcttcrmcn arc fighting for the two gu:,:d spots. Bill DuRottc and Neil Potter, 'just elected team captain) appear as the pri mary goers on offense. Other stal warts include Dave Ferguson and Daniel Katchia. Ferguson was ill the first week or so of practice, and probably won't see too much action against La Grande. Katchia is a demon on defense. "He's very tough. . . very quick," Good said of Katchia. He will probably play linebacker, as he has no particular speed. At halfbacks. Madras shapes up good. Wayne Maw. though not a quick starter, has tremendous speed. "Maw has looked excep tional." Coach Good said.. "He's I already as good as he was last Boot he faces Schinkel in Juniper Club crown go Sp(l! fa Tha Bulltlln REDMOND - It s Earl Booth vs Bob Schinkel for the Juniper Golf Club championship, it was announced today. Championship play will com mence Sunday. ' September 22, Golf Pro Frank Acquino said to day. Schinkel defeated Chuck Ho gan 3-2 and Boothe whipped Ever ett Reynolds 3-1 in the semis. In women's action Wednesday. 'Chapman style and 'i of com bined handicap) there appeared a three-pair deadlock for first Hba Massey and Martha Wood carded a H. as did Lonrue Boothe and Martha Stranahan, and Leilah Sparks with Leone Shop- shire. Men's Thursday play (match play vs. par with full handicap) saw Earl Boothe win the event. ' scoring 6 up. Marion Coyncr was second, i up. Others finished as ! Bib Ludwig. 3 up. John Hocdeck- I or, 2 up, and Karl Arensmeier, , 3 up- year at his peak in the Redmond game." At the other half Madras has Alvis Smith, who takes off like a shot. Smith is a two-year lettcrman and was the leading rusher last year. At fullback, Good probably will start Sam Strong, 170 pounds of sophomore, who is a good blocker and runs hard. Veteran fullback George Wright was run ning well in drills this week, but started practice late. Strong will start against La Grande, but Wright will probably be the choice in later games. Good announced today he is go ing to start Larry Barnes at quarterback. Ralph Mimuck is ready to step in at any minute, however. Mlnnirk has tremendous speed and can rifle a pass. Barnes, however, appears to bo c o o 1 er under fire. Bud Miller is a third field general. He is slow but can throw well. He will do the punting. Madras isn't overly strong at the ends. Good said last night he will start Doug Stewart on the right wing, and Bob Kramer on the left. Stewart is a junior and a letlerman. He is a good receiv er and has good speed. Kramer is also a junior but a nonlcttcr man. Good disclosed that he is not a top maneuverer yet, but is improving rapidly. Frank Orrcll is a dynamo at end, too. But he is another who was not out at first. He probably will not see action against the Ti gers. A good blocker and tackier. Orrell reportedly has speed to go with it. An- amazing thing has happen ed at the center position. Veteran John Givens was pushed aside for starting berth this week by upstart Ed Fuller. Fuller is a jun ior and a non-letterman, but has a great deal of JV experience. Coach Good gave an overall opinion of his club. He said, "we'll be forced to go with ba sically a running game. . .prob ably all season. Tins year we'll run from the tight T formation more than the split T we used some las' vear. We'll be a little ' more solid." As In the La Grande lest to night, Good said, "I have no idea what they'll throw at us. . .but one thing is for sure, we're read ier for the first game of the sea son than any year I've been here so far." Every year Madras opens against a powerhouse. According to Good, his White Buffaloes have lost three of their initial encount ers by a single touchdown, and one by two. This year the tables could turn.
