A LOOK AT SPORTS 30 Oregonians now playing pro football i By Web Ruble Bulletin Sports Editor i Quite often you read in Oregon newspapers about some ex-Duck or ex-Beaver doing something in pro football. Most of the time a prid fan will be able to remem ber the name if not the person ality. If one can't, it's not alarming. There are quite a few in the pro grid ranks. . I never stopped to figure out which school has placed the most, or retained any knowledge of who Is where. Last week the Eugene Register-Cuard came out with a ;list of cx-Oregon grid greats that ,riave "made it" and are current ly playing In the pros. ; According to Dick Strite of the Register-Guard there are 12 Ore gonians in the National Football League, 10 in the American Foot ball League, and eight in the Canadian Football League. These Oregonians were not all Ducks or Beavers. Some went elsewhere to school. In analyzing the list, the reader may get a shock. Of the veterans in the NFL, Oregon State has four and Oregon three, hut poor little old Idaho has five! In the NFL. Oregon's Steve Bamett. an Ail-American tackle last year, is a rookie with the Chi cago Bears. Terry Baker, 1962 Heisman trophy winner from OSU. is rookie with the Los An peles Rams along with Oregon's Bill Swain. OSU has a pro veteran In Aaron Thomas. He is with the New York Giants. Ex-Beaver Ted Bates is another veteran. He is with the Cardinals. Dallas has picked off several. They include veterans, Sam Baker (OSU), Amos Marsh (OSU), Mike Gaetcher (IFP, and rookie Jolin Thomas (OSU). The Washington Redskins has a bunch of ex Ducks: veterans Dick James and Riley Mattson, and rookie Ron Snidow. In the AFL, the rosters with Oregonians stack up like this: Paul Lowe (OSU) is with the San Diego Chargers. Charlie Marshall and Jim Stinette (both OSU) and George Shaw and Jerry T a r r 1 (both UO are scrapping It with Denver. Hank Rivera of OSU and Jack Stone of Oregon are with Oakland. John Pinera of OSU and Willie West o Oregon are grid riing It with Buffalo. Dainard Paulson of OSU is with the New Vork Jets. Up In the Canadian loop is found Nub Beamer and Paul Scale (both of OSU), and Emery Barnes UO but now a Canadian citizen) with the British Columbia Lions. Three ex-Beavers are with Saskatchewan. They are, Neil Plumley. Jack Gota and Roger Johnson. Dave Mann of OSU is with Toronto. Three former Web- I foots are gone: Dave Groz and Mickey Ording, and Darrell Asch bacher. Aschbacher never intend ed to report. Strite said. Mor about Eligio Well. . .I've done it again. Mis spelling a name is one thing that irks me, especially when I do it myself. I'm referring to Eligio Galicia. For two days in a row its been wrong. It's not Garcia . . .it's not Gallicia. . .it's simply Galicia. Galicia Is truly a runner. We stopped by new Bruin Field yes terday afternoon to watch Mex ico's only hope in the 1964 Olym pic Games take a workout. He is here in Bend training under the watchful eye of Bob Johnson, athletic director at Central Ore gon College. Yesterday Galicia was running a series of five 800's (meters), slowing down to a trot for a lap or two between each one. He ap pears to he nearly inexhaustible. He is both a 5.000 and a 10.000 meter man. He is no sprinter, though, and because of this he seldom runs races of less than three miles (5000 meters)l. He has run a 4:20 mile, however. John son has Galicia in his program of speed training. Galicia found Johnson's system working before, and hopes now to keep improv ing with it.
