Wing lived in Bend as a young child, and this was his first visit here in over 40 years. His parents. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wing, early-day Bend residents, now live in Bellflower, Calif. The elder Wing once operated a saw mill here. Alcoholics Anonymous will con duct its regular meeting at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1, in the dis trict courtroom of the courthouse. Summer cotton dresses and flats for the women and shirt sleeved regalia for the men is to be the costume for the evening, the committee reports. Special devices for additional fun and amusement are planned f X WILLIAM L SCHOLTES To join PP&L staff hers Scholtes named to PP & L post Appointment of William L. Scholtes of Portland to be admin istrative assistant to Howard Arnett, recently named the Cen tral Division manager for Pacific Power & Light Company s newly established division headquarters in Bend, was announced Wednesday. Scholtes has been the district office manager for the large Portland district since October, 1959, and previously was the com pany's district office manager at The Dalles for mora than three years. Prior to that PP&L district of fice management post he had worked in several positions in The Dalles office, where he started working for PP&L in 1946. Except for one year away on military duty with the U.S. Ma rine Corps in 1950, Scholtes work ed at The Dalles until he was promoted to the Portland position. Briefing given Tr on Newport pilot program Lions of Bend at their weekly luncheon Tuesday were briefed on the pilot operations of Newport Industries in the Deschutes woods, in connection with the firm's stud ies of the economics of harvesting some 2,000,000 tons of old pine stumps. Don E. Brown, Newport Indus tries logging superintendent, touched on the background of the extraction of chemicals from pine stumps, and the role of these chemicals in so - called n a v . 1 stores. Brown showed pictures of pine stump harvesting in the southern states. Pat Metke, representing the Bend Chamber of Commerce in dustrial committee, introduced A. A. Poust, Deschutes National Forest supervisor, who touched on the huge amount of old pine stumps available in the Des chutes, Fremont and Winema Na tional Forests. Should the harvest of old stumps for their resin residue prove eco nomical, the Hayden - Newport firm plans to establish a multi million dollar plant in the Bend- Klamaui area. "Bend is a fine city, and we like it. Brown said. Glenn Ratcliff, who heads the Lions as president, was in gener al charge of the meeting. Bike licensing starts Thursday Bend city police will license bi cycles Thursday starting at 9 a.m. in police headquarters, Chief Emil Moen announced today. All bicycles must be licensed, : a city ordinance directs, hut no fee is charged. Owners must bring their bikes with them. Moen also cautions bike-riders to be heedful of the following frequently violated bike regulations: 1. Equip bikes with headlight and tail reflector. 2. Always keep to the extreme right of roadways and alleyways. 3. Give hand signals for turns and stops. 4. Observe stop signs. 5. Dont ride your bike on foot bridges or on sidewalks in the business district. 6. Carry no passenger unless your bike is equipped to convey two persons. 7. When emerging from an al leyway give the right-of-way to pedestrians and autos. 8. Don't race with other bikes. CITATION ISSUED Charles Jefferson Dudley, 235 Broadway, collected a traffic ci tation this morning from city po lice charging him with making an illegal U-turn between inter sections. Bail is $7.50. Alice V. Ivanoff dies at age 50 Alice Valentine Ivanoff, 50, a resident of 1423 Fresno Avenue, died Tuesday evening in her home. Mrs. Ivanoff had been a com munity resident since moving here from Westport in 1958. She was born on Snuvics Island on Feb. 14. 1913. Among survivors are her hus band, Leo; two daughters, Mrs. George Nakayama, Chino Valley, Ariz., and Mrs. Robert Keys, Walla Walla, Wash.; four broth ers, Joseph Tooley, Vancouver, Wash.; Alfred Tooley, St Helens; Watler Tooley, Portland, and Orey Tooley, Svensen; four sisters. Mrs. Harry Stewart, Westport; Mrs. Frank Middle! on, Sweet Home; Mrs. John Simpson, Bend, and Mrs. Wayne Johnson. Sven sen, and five grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the Colcman Rushing Funeral Home, St. Hel ens. Interment is scheduled in the Bay View Cemetery at War ren, Ore. In charge of local arrangements is Tabor's Bend Funeral Homo. Delegates off for convention First members of a Bend dele gation that will attend the Oregon department of the American Le gion in Pendleton this weekend headed for the eastern Oregon city today. First to leave was Wil liam J. Baer, who will also attend the 40 et 8 conclave. Others going will be Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Niebergall, Bob Keyes and Hobart Starr, Deschutes coun ty service officer. This will be Niebergall's 44th attendance at a state convention of the American Legion. He has missed none, and has also attend ed a number of national conven- jtions of the Legion.
