Presenting a compilation of fig ures on local traffic mishaps was Mrs. Vinita Howard, information al representative of the Oregon Traffic Safety Commission. Point ing out that in 1962 some $500,000 was lost to the city In expenses resulting from accidents involv ing Bend residents, she urged the establishment of a citizens' safety council, and made other recom mendations. The Bend area, Mrs. Howard said, appeared to be most in need of an active organization for traf fic improvement. Her suggestion was for an Independent council composed of from 35 to 100 mem bers representing civic and serv ice clubs and local Industries. Bend for several years had such a committee but it Is now de funct In summarizing her f 1 g u re s, Mrs. Howard complimented the city's traffic engineering and traf- fice court programs, but suggest ed greater progress could be made in such areas as school and public traffic safety education. She also advised that more traffic offend ers should appear in court, rather than merely post bail for their of fenses. OPEN EVERY FRIDAY UNTIL 'Don Juan in Hell' well received by play audience By Ha Grant Hopper Bullttin Staff Writer Bend Community Playerr open ed their week-long run of "Don Juan in Hell" last night at the Bowers Studio. The two-part skit from "Man and Superman" was well received by an audience of sponsors and guests. , Performances will be given nightly all this week, through Sun day, with shows starting at 8:30. Tickets will be available at the box office. Characters in the abstract dream sequence moulh some of the best observations of the pithy English playwright, the late George Bernard Shaw. Controver sial subjects that have made for good conversation through the ages are discussed with a candor that was considerably more shock ing when the play was written than it is today. Politics, war, religion and man's questionable superiority over the other animals are targets of Shaw's expert needling. Coming in for only slightly less pointed stabs are many traditional insti tutions and philanthropises. Marriage, government, patrio tism, virtue, wealth, prestige, power all these and more are ribbed glibly, often cleverly. Emo tions such as fear, love, hate, loyalty, jealousy and prida are scrutinized In the manner of mod ern psychologists. yards, Chrom- MMMttttteMe.tlllaMettaal.aaaaaaaaa The play Is presented In the round, with lines read from the script, making for informality and close communication with the audience. Bill Bowers Is well cast as the eloquent Don Juan, and George Tadevic is a smooth and philo sophical devil. Shirley Snively is poised as the aristocratic Ana, the eternal mother type who defends her conception of manners and morals. Bryant Hilliard, the command er, gets many of the laughs as the military statue, riding a hob by horse. Appearing competently in opening scenes is Jan Mouser, as the old woman. The play Is recommended for an evening that is both entertain ing and intellectually stimulating. Relaxing summer theater, it pro vides a refreshing change of pace.
