Simmons, left, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Sim mons, Bond, was recently presented with the Air Force Com mendation Medal in retirement ceremonies at Travis AFB, California. Malting the presentation was Brig. Gen. W. H. Brandon. A graduate from Bend High School, Simmons served with the Air Force for 21 years. Sgt. Simmons, his wife, Marjorie, and their daughter Louise, will make their home in Fairfield, Calif. Merritt, Prineville, Martha L. Pence, Bend, and Vic tor L. Suratt, Madras, each re ceived a $200 college scholarship. This scholarship is offered each year to one 4-H Club member and one vocational agriculture student in each of the 198 counties served by Union Pacific. The farm youth scholarships program will be 42 years old on August 1. Since it began, 9043 boys rnd girls have received $677, 931. Oregon has had 817 winners and 540 of these have used their awards. No injuries in car collision One car suffered major damage Tuesday morning in a rear-end collision at the South Third Street Dell Lane intersection. Driving the vehicles, both head ed north on Third, were Albert Charles Mimmick, 541.: Gilchrist Ave., and Lynnie Warren lieed, 16. of 1142 Galveston Ave. No in juries occurred. Police said Mimmick was slow ing to make a left turn onto Dell Lane when the Reed car struck the rear end of his car. Owners of the Reed car, which received heavy damage, are Lloyd and Wanda Reed. Mimmick's ve hicle was only moderately dam aged, police said. The ranch is the spread well known to oldtime residents as the Day Creek Ranch, or the "Yan cey place," southeast of Prine ville. Some 13,000 acres of deed ed land were sold by the Yancey family to Barney Corbin and Merton Schwartz on April 11. Mrs. and Mrs. Don Y'ancey and family, living on the ranch at the time, later moved to a small acreage near Prineville. The ranch was originally own ed, according to the memory of members of the family, by famed Colonel Nye who figured in epoch making events during the settle ment of Crook County, Including the cattle and sheep wars. The ranch was later purchased by Steve Yancey, sold, and re purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Don Yancey some years ago. Auction sale is to be held in the Portland Sheraton Hotel fol lowing free flights over the ranch area by prospective customers next weekend. Lantz named board chairman Special ts The Bulletin REDMOND Norman Lantz was named chairman of the Red mond Union High School board of directors for the 1963-64 school year at its organization meeting Monday at the 6ehool. Dan Kilgore was named vice chairman. Mrs. Neil Shive, clerk, administered the oath of office to Lantz and Dr. Robert L. Unger, who were elected last spring. Two grade school directors, Pershing Andrews and Robert Whittier. and the grade district clerk, Mrs. Marjorie Robinson, were on hand to assist with open ing bids on furnace oil and gaso line. Representatives of five oil firms also were in attendance. Bids of Mid-Oregon Oil Company for both gasoline and furnace oil for the bus garago were accepted, having been the lowest received. The bid from Deschutes Farmers' Cooperative for fuel oil for the high school building was accepted. The group voted to ask for bids for construction of a new exit to the high school. It was announced that Clyde Talbot, bus manager, had left by plane July 5 for Lima, Ohio, where he will pick up a new school bus. He planned to be back in Redmond by July 12. Rural fire district may buy rig The Rural Fire Protection Dis trict 2, Board is negotiating to day with the Capital Fire Equip-, meat Company on its bid for sale of a new tinker rig, to be pur chased by the district and do nated to the City of Bend. A bid submitted Tuesday by the company was lowest of four, when bids were opened iin the of fice of DeArmond, Goodrich, Gray & Fancher. But all bids, a board member said, were higher than the anticipated figure. The Capital firm is a regional distributor for the Howe Fire Ap paratus Company of Sacramento, Calif.
