The ugly duckling of Milwaukee
Is becoming the darling of Cleve
land. He's Joe Adcock, the gangling,
drawling, free-swinging first base
man from Coushatta, La., who
spent 13 years with the Braves
befora they decided he wag un
lucky and traded him last No
vember to the Indians.
Big Joe said at the time that
he couldn't understand the trade.
Today it's quite likely that nei
ther the Indians nor the Braves
can fathom what possessed the
Braves to make it, either.
Adcock, 83, is one of the ma
jor reasons why the Indians are
surging into American League
contention with aix straight vic
tories and nine in their last 10
games. He's hitting a hefty .304,
has collected eight homers and
knocked In 24 runs. '
Adcock drove in three runs
with a homer and two singles
and Jerry Kindall also had three
hits Wednesday niglit as the In
dians whipped the Detroit Tigers
12-8 to reach the .500-level at 26
wins and 26 losses.
Pitch Sidelines Davalille
! Kindall entered the game as a
pinch-runner for Vic Davalillo,
the Indians' fine young center
fielder who suffered a broken
arm when hit by one of Hank
Aguirre's pitches. Davalillo will
be lost to the Indians for at least
a month.
The New York Yankees re
gained first place by a point
when they beat the Baltimore
Orioles 3-2, the Los Angeles An
j;els defeated the Chicago White
Sox 5-0 after a 3-1 loss, the Kan
sas City Athletics drubbed the
MinnesoU Twins 12-4 but the
Twins rebounded for an 8-1 win
and the Boston Red Sox topped
the Washington Senators 5-3 in
other AL action.
The San Francisco Giants
downed the Chicago Cubs 3-1, the
Los Angeles Dodgers routed the
Houston Colts 9-1. the Philadel
phia Phillies defeated the St.
Louis Cardinals 6-2 the Milwau
kee Braves clubbed the New York
Mets 9-0, and the Cincinnati Reds
blanked the Pittsburgh Pirate;
5-0 in the National League.
Chuck Essegian and Ken Har
relson each hit a two-run homer
to lead Kansas City's first-game
17-hit attack that brought Dave
Wickerhsma his fifth win. Har
mon Killebrew's ninth homer
helped Camilo Pascual win his
ninth game for Minnesota in the
nightcap although the Twin ace
left the game after the fifth in
ning with a strained muscle in
hisshoulder.
Ed Bressoud. Dick Stuart and
Carl Yastrzemski hit homers to
lead the Red Sox' seven-hit at
tack that dealt Dave Stenhout
his seventh defeat. Bill Monbou
quette pitched an eight-hitter and
struck nut 10 to win his eighth
game for the Red Sox. '

It was a hitter's day in little
league action yesterday as the
small size ballplayer's bats boom
ed to the tune of 65 runs in the
three games played.
Things started out quietly
enough at Marshall Field as the
Eagles squeezed by Lelco by a
scanty 3-1 margin behind the no
hit pitching of Steve Bjorvic. Over
at Juniper Field, tilings were a
little wilder but still within reason
as Snoop fc Schulze outlasted
Healy's for a 13-11 victory.
But it was over on Harmon
Field that things really got out of
hand as the Brandis little lea
guers rode tall in the saddle to
completely trounce Dairy Queen
by an amazing 34-3 score.
First baseman Daryl McMeen
scored six runs to lead the Bran
dis scoring parade that tallied
eight runs In the third inning,
thirteen runs in the fourth inn-

i ing and ten more counters in the
fifth frame.
Twenty-two walks and 23 hits
including seven doubles proved
Dairy Queen's undoing. Dave
Fuqua led the Brandis hitting
barrage with 5 hits in six official
trip to the plate. Fuqua was also
credited with a "save" of sorts as
he relieved winning pitcher Ron
Storey in the third inning.
Healy's put together two giant
scoring innings in their contest
with Shoop and Schulze but it
wasn't enough to keep up with the
Shoopmen, who tallied at least
once in every inning.
Left fielder Dalrympie led the
winner's attack with three hits
in tour trips to the plate. Ivy
and Kremers tied for hitting hon
ors for the losers, each getting
two hits.
Steve Bjorvic tossed a neat no
hitter to lead the Eagles to their
3-1 victory over Lelco. Lelco scor
ed their only run on an error in
the third inning.
Bjorvic also led the Eagles in
the hitting department as he bang
ed out a double and a triple in
two at bats,
