Name Kirsch top district coach EUGENE a'PP- Don Kirsch, University of Oregon baseball coach, has been named "Coach of the Year" by the NCAA District 8, it was announced today. W. P. Serhring. baseball chair man of the District 8, said all district 8 coaches chose Kirsch in a district-wide vote. Kirsch, who guided the Ducks to second place in the Northern Division, had a 25-7 record for the season. Franklin Phone 382-5731 By Web Ruble Bulletin Staff Writer Local fans won't see It unless tlicy travel, but this weekend's battle between the Bend Ameri can Legion baseball nine and Wol fards of Oregon City has some interesting sidelights. It's sort of a father-and-son sit uation. Coach Bill Bauer's Bend crew will be facing an always lough squad coached by his fath er, Wayne Bauer. Bill Bauer, himself, played un der his father's coaching while at lenduig Oregon City High School and played Legion ball there. Earlier this season, Bauer's baseballers faced a team from next door to Oregon City, Clacka mas, coached by his brother-in-law, Dwayne Helbig. They split. Three games are on the slate for this weekend: one on Satur day and two on Sunday. The Ore gon City Legion Is barely under way for the season. Last Saturday evening, the Wol fards (Oregon City) made six er rors and werp the virlim nf u base hits, as Watco Legionnaires (of the Cleveland lu'gh area in Portland) took them to the clean ers. 1l-t. Wolfards is in the Area IT Le gion League with David Douglas of Portland. Clackamas, Ray nolds, Parkrose, Centennial and Milwaukie. Bauer's prep aggregation was slated to faca Oregon City this spring, but the rains came. A year ago, Bend and Oregon City squared-off in high school en counters, with Bend coming out on die long end. K-Fall Monday Following this weekend's triple header, the local Legionnaires turn right around and host a Klamath Kails Legion nine Monday eve ning. Bend is one notch better than this season's prep squad with the addition of four other Central Ore gonians. Don Watrous and Derald Par sons of Redmond form a formid able battery, with Parsons doing the chucking and Watrous catch ing. They also double In other po sitions. Both can hit.. Madras sent down a playing pair to Bend for some summer ball-whacking, too. One look at Bill Bauer (Madras' baseballer with the same name as Bend's coach) and Larry Barnes, and fans see "the long and the short of it. Bauer is a towering pitch' er and Barnes is a minute uifield er who is as versatile as he is short. He can pitch, field, run, slide, and does well in the bat ter s box. Bauer has strength and endur ance, according to Coach Bauer, and could become a real diamond dynamo. Both Bauer and Barnes were outstanding this spring on the Madras prep nine. Rookie tilt rained ouf Kain was the victor last eve ning when the Oregon Equipment baseball team and the Gordon Randall nine met at Harmon Field for the Bend Rookie Lea gue's second contest. Only three and a half innings were completed before the tilt was called off because of the down pour. At that point. Oregon Equipment vts leading 10-3. Oregon Equipment picked up five tallies in the third inning and three in the fourth. All of Gordon Randall's came in the third. No arrangements were an nounced for re-scheduling of the game. Forman named ! 'most valuable1 EUGENE (UPI) - Star senior miler Keith Forman has been picked for the annual Scharp Award as the most valuable Ore gon trackman this year by team vote, Coach Bill Bowerman an nounced Tuesday.
