Dr. Cressman will recall the excavation of the cave more than 25 years ago. The cave yielded sagebrush bark sandals later car- bon dated to be more than 9000 years old. He will bring for dis play some of the artifacts ta ken from the cave. W. Ward Y eager, superintend ent of Crater Lake National Park, will represent the national park service in presenting the certifi cate of registration and the bronze marker to Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Long, owners of the land on which the cave is located. Setting aside the cave will take place at the site, according to Mrs. Maurice Ward, local pro gram chairman. The cave Is ap proximately a mile and a half from the landmark, "Fort Rock." Representatives from Oregon's organizations specializing in the study of anthropology and arch aeology are expected to attend. Acceptance of the certificate and marker by the Longs charges them with the responsibility of "preserving, so far as practical, and to the best of their ability, the historical integrity of this im portant part of the national cul tural heritage." Long acquired the property aft er the cave had been excavated. During the period of discovery it was owned by the George Men kenmaier family and was then known as the Menkenmaier Cave. It Is believed locally that dis covery of the artifacts, and their recovery in a scientific manner, can be credited to Gerry Wolff who visited the Menkenmaiers regularly with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wolff of Chilo quin to hunt arrowheads. Gerry, a student of Dr. Cressman, recog nized the potential valin of such a discovery. Until recently It was felt that this cave yielded the oldest evi dence of man's dwelling on the North American continent. New discoveries, pointed out by this dedicated and distinguished scien tist, indicate, by the same carbon test method, that the Pacific Northwest was inhabited as long as 35,000 years ago. A rude knife fashioned of basalt has been found In tho gravels of the Spokane Hood of the last glacial period, deposited at the mouth of the John Day. ; At the conclusion of the dedica tion ceremonies here the assem bly will move to the picnic area adjacent to "Fort Rock" where ladies of the Fort Rock Grange will serve lunch.
